A position is available for an independent-thinking, enthusiastic and self-motivated post-doctoral fellow in the research lab of Dr. Malia Edwards at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Edwards and her team are taking a novel approach to studying age-related macular degeneration by investigating the potential roles two understudied cells, retinal Müller cells and choroidal mast cells, play in disease pathology. In addition to working on NIH funded projects, the fellow will have the opportunity to interact with industry collaborators. Dr. Edwards is excited to welcome the incumbent into the lab and mentor him/her in developing their own research career.

Job responsibilities: The post-doctoral fellow will work closely with Dr. Edwards in designing and performing experiments. The work in Dr. Edwards lab involves a wide variety of techniques including: cell culture, animal models, molecular biology, single cell RNAseq, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. The fellow will also be expected to write manuscripts, present data in departmental and national conferences and assist with grant writing and reporting.

Qualifications
  • PhD in neuroscience, visual science, molecular biology or related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly preferred: RPE cell biology, vascular biology, ophthalmology, glial cells, oxidative stress, inflammation, aging.
  • Experience with the following techniques is desired: cell culture, real time PCR, immunohistochemistry, rodent handling
  • Experience with the following would also be beneficial: RNA seq analysis, viewRNA or RNAscope, cell transfection
  • Most importantly: the ability to work and think independently but also in a team environment.
