Brief Description of Duties
The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Arts and Humanities, and English Program is seeking an accomplished creative writing and composition specialist at the assistant professor level. The responsibilities of the position include teaching undergraduate courses in creative composition, creative writing, as well as graduate writing and courses within the candidate’s supporting areas of expertise. Faculty will teach face to face with opportunities to develop online, hybrid, and hyflex options. The prevailing faculty member will assist the English program with assessment and ongoing curricular revision to meet changing demands of twenty-first century English programs, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which methods of creative writing serve diverse student writers across various technologies of distribution. This includes supporting and developing intersections and cross-listings with other programs in the division, particularly the journalism concentration in Digital Media and graphic design in Arts. This faculty member will foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration, in the program and across the division, to better share the importance and beauty of the fine arts and humanities with the larger campus community. Other duties include serving on program, division, college, and/or university committees, maintaining an active creative- and research agenda, working collaboratively with program and division faculty, performing service, administrative, and assessment-related tasks to enhance the quality of the program. Engagement in diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service is strongly preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides student supports (advising, mentoring, co-curricular design) across English BA degree
  • Teaches composition in the Interdisciplinary General Education Program (IGED)
  • Supports student writing across all undergraduate and graduate degrees
  • Teach undergraduate courses in creative composition, creative writing, writing for new media, and journalism
  • Ability to teach courses intersecting with two of the following areas is preferred: African American Literature, Black Global Studies, and Digital Humanities
  • Develop new course offerings and co-curricular engagements that serve students across the Division of Arts and Humanities
  • Participate in curriculum review, assessment, and ongoing development of curriculum
  • Maintain a productive program of research and creative activity and publication
  • Provide service to the university, college, division, program, and profession
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in English or related field, or MFA
  • At least 3 years of experience teaching at the college level
  • Evidence of creative and scholarly publications and a well-developed research platform
  • Evidence of community service and community-focused writing preferred
  • Active visibility within professional networks
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.


Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.


Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B ). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
