Alfred University invites applications for the position of Dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS). The Dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS) will oversee a range of programs that are located in a variety of locations. SGCS offers programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels and serves both traditional and non-traditional student populations.

Campus-based graduate programs are located within the Division of Counseling and School Psychology, and include the NASP-accredited M.A./C.A.S. in School Psychology; the APA-accredited Psy.D. in School Psychology; the M.S.Ed. in College Student Development, the M.S.Ed./C.A.S. in School Counseling, and
M.S.Ed./C.A.S. in Mental Health Counseling. The Division of Counseling and School Psychology is affiliated with the Lea R. Powell Institute for Children and Families, an organizing entity for the research, training, and service missions for the division.

AUNY Programs
New York City

Off-campus Master’s level programs, which are extension programs of our home campus offerings, include a Master of Science degree in School Counseling, a Master of Public Administration degree, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mental Health Counseling. Courses for these programs are made available through Alfred University’s partnership with the Center for Integrated Teacher Education (CITE), which has provided professional development and in-service courses for teachers, principals, and related school staff since 1983. CITE is a professional service organization that manages the logistical operations for Alfred University's New York City programs.

Classes in Alfred’s New York City programs are offered at venues in Brooklyn, Westchester, and Oceanside (Long Island). Programs at these locations are designed for working professionals and recent college graduates in the Metropolitan Area.

Corning, NY
Alfred University offers a graduate extension program at Corning Community College (CCC) in Corning, New York. This M.S.Ed. in Literacy program is presented in a format that fits the schedules of individuals who are working full-time and unable to attend traditional graduate programs.

Alfred University, in collaboration with Corning Community College, offers Bachelor’s Degree completion programs in Early Childhood/Childhood Education and Psychology. These programs are designed for students who are unable to attend traditional residential colleges due to everyday life circumstances such as work, family or the inability to relocate. The education program prepares students to meet the academic requirements of the New York State Education Department for certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth - 2nd Grade) and Childhood Education (1st - 6th grade).

The responsibilities of the Dean include but are not limited to:
  • Providing visionary leadership in ensuring excellence in student learning
  • Overseeing graduate programs in psychology and counseling, including overseeing the Lea R. Powell Institute for Children and Families
  • Facilitating the relationship with the Center for Integrated Teacher Education (CITE) in the administration of New York City programs, including advising the provost and president regarding agreements with CITE
  • Creating new programs within the AUNY extension
  • Developing and coordinating community college partnership articulations and co-locations, such as that with Corning Community College
  • Developing strategies for collaboration in the areas of student recruitment, admissions, retention, finances, and facilities
  • Operating external programs at a net revenue
  • Actively seeking external funding for the units under their leadership
The Dean of SGCS will foster an inclusive community where all voices and perspectives are not only respected but also considered critical to the educational culture. The Dean will advocate for diversity in hiring of professionals and recruitment of students.

Requirements: Candidate must have an earned doctorate in Counselor Education, School Psychology, Education or a related field; knowledge of New York State Education Department procedures and requirements for graduate programs, education, and internships/practicums related to education and counseling; familiarity with professional accreditation bodies and procedures; and substantial fiscal and budgetary experience.

Other desirable qualifications include:
  • A strong record of teaching at the college level
  • An administrative record that successfully reflects an ability to promote diversity and inclusion goals among faculty and students, as well as within the curriculum
  • Effectiveness in person-to-person and group communications with students, faculty, administration, and staff
  • Experience developing new undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Active participation with national and/or international academic or professional organizations
  • An understanding of current demographic and social trends as they pertain to program innovation and delivery
