The Position: Assistant Professor in Psychology – Cognitive Science

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a terminal degree in Psychology or related area such as Cognitive Science. Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than August 17, 2022. Requirements include: the ability and interest in teaching an undergraduate course in cognitive psychology; the ability and interest in teaching an undergraduate course in critical thinking and decision-making; the ability and willingness to supervise undergraduate and graduate student research projects; accomplishments in research and scholarly activities; and a record of or potential for grant development. The successful candidate should provide evidence of their commitment to or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include demonstration of the potential for excellence in instruction at the university level; experience teaching cognitive psychology; experience teaching critical thinking and decision-making; ability and interest in teaching an undergraduate course in human perception; ability and interest in teaching an undergraduate course in brain, mind, and behavior; evidence of a student-centered approach to instruction; experience working with diverse student groups; ability to teach using a variety of instructional formats (in-person, HyFlex, and online); interest in research with an applied focus, in which cognitive principles are applied to real world issues; and the ability and willingness to collaborate with other faculty and students on research projects. Bilingual candidates will be given preference.

Responsibilities:

This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching undergraduate courses, scholarship (developing a successful research program; seeking external funding), and service. Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department.

The Department:

The Psychology Department is a collegial group of 21 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, 23 lecturers, and three office staff members. The department supports collaboration among faculty in the department and across campus. There are approximately 1200 majors, 150 minors, and 100 graduate students. The department offers a BA in Psychology and MA and MS degree programs for preparing students for MFT licensure, school psychology, doctoral study and other professions. The Psychology Department is a part of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences .
