Summary

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire a Trades/Utilities Worker-Carpentry in the Physical Plant Department. This position is primarily responsible for identifying and completing maintenance, repair, and replacement work orders independently. As a member of the Zone Maintenance team, the incumbent will maintain, repair, and install building components, primarily in carpentry, as well as other building systems with the goal of providing a quality physical environment in support of the University's mission. Support the goals of Virginia Commonwealth University by maintaining and operating the university's capital assets to facilitate effective and efficient educational delivery. The chosen candidate will work in a variety of settings which include academic, research, clinical, medical, and animal resource departments.

Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Journeyman level knowledge of Carpentry in an instructional, industrial, and commercial setting
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees, and customers
  • Ability to maintain records of maintenance on various systems & components
  • Ability to use power tools and test instruments typically utilized by the Carpentry trade
  • Basic computer skills including emails, word documents, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Ability to organize work processes based upon priority and work independently
  • Designated to work and be on call during emergencies and inclement weather
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • 5+ years of carpentry experience in a commercial/institutional setting
  • Working knowledge of other trades (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.)
  • Understanding of water & mold remediation techniques. Certification from IICRC is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of the use of scissor lifts, personal vertical lifts, and snow removal equipment
  • Familiarity using work management software
  • Familiarity with State of Virginia procurement policies
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
