Mission or Goal of Unit: The overarching mission of the Department of Internal Medicine is the pursuit of excellence in each facet of its tripartite mission: To educate the physicians and health care professionals of tomorrow, the physicians and health care professionals of today and the community-at-large; To provide superior, compassionate and innovative clinical care to our patients using state-of-the-art knowledge and resources; and To conduct and disseminate cutting-edge biomedical research and scholarship, with a focus on translational research that can be quickly applied to the care of patients. The Division of Infectious Diseases provides clinical care to patients with all types of infectious processes in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Eighteen faculty members make up the division. The primary areas of research include health care epidemiology, antimicrobial pharmacoepidemiology, transplant infectious diseases, and HIV clinical trials.

Chief Purpose of this position: This position is an Assistant Professor, tenure-eligible faculty position for a Hospital Epidemiologist/General Infectious Diseases Faulty member of MCVP. The successful candidate should have completed Fellowship in Infectious Diseases, and should have a demonstrated experience within hospital epidemiology and/or antimicrobial stewardship. This physician will be responsible for physician duties as part of the Hospital Infection Prevention Program (HIPP) as well as providing support to the overall Division of Infectious Diseases as directed by the Division Chair.

Position Responsibilities:

1. Teaching
Faculty member will have the opportunity for teaching in the areas of infectious diseases and host-pathogen interactions.

2. Research
Faculty member will have the opportunity for research in areas of immunocompromised host-pathogen interactions and infectious diseases.

3. Service
Faculty member will serve on departmental, School, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field (e.g., reviewer, study section service, officer in a national society, etc.).

4. Clinical
Faculty member will contribute to clinical mission of VCU Health providing comprehensive care to patients and working with interdisciplinary teams to provide superior clinical care. Faculty member will share responsibility for infectious diseases coverage of inpatient consult service and will provide outpatient care for infectious diseases patients.

Required Qualifications: Board eligible/board certified M.D. (or equivalent M.B.B.S or D.O.) with experience in infectious diseases or a closely related discipline. Record of publication and conference dissemination demonstrating expertise in the faculty’s area of research. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications: Program experience with Hospital Infection Prevention Programming or Infection Control
