Chief Purpose of this position and Primary Responsibilities:

Provides leadership and support at VCU Health MCV location for the Spiritual Care Department, providing for an appropriate and comprehensive ministry of spiritual care, counseling, consultation, education, and emotional support for patients, families, providers and team members.

Directly supports staff chaplains and volunteers. In collaboration with Clinical Pastoral Education Certified Educators, ensures clinical coverage of the hospital. Participates in the hospital clinical coverage rotation including holiday coverage.

As delegated by the Spiritual Care Department Director, represents the department in interdisiciplinary hospital meetings, committees, and activities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with hospital leadership. As delegated by the Director, meets with community members and organizations, faith communities, outside agencies and other health professionals to promote positive hospital relations.

Under the leadership of the Director, responds to team member needs following crisis and/or workplace violence. In partnership with EAP, provides support response and other resilience/wellbeing interventions. Under the leadership of the Director collaborates with others on recognition and memorialization of significant events such as team member death, organizational change, or other significant events.

Participates leadership and department meetings. In collaboration with the Director explores evidenced based practice to bring to the team for consideration and implementation.

Responsible for hiring team members in consultation with the Director.

Responsible for clinical competency and leadership development of chaplains at the hospital.


Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree (72 hours) in Theology or equivalent (as determined by the Association of Professional Chaplains) from an accredited institution recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • Completion of four units of clinical pastoral education as certified by one of the following: the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); or The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS).
  • Board Certified by one of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC); National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC); or The Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association Canadienne des Soins Spirituels (CASC/ACSS).
  • Have a minimum of 5-7 years’ experience (post CPE) as a chaplain.
  • Have a minimum of 2-3 years of leadership experience in healthcare or healthcare chaplaincy.
  • Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.
  • Knowledge of clinical ethics and ethical decision making
  • Good decision-making skills
  • Excellent project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience serving as a mentor for Clinical Pastoral Education Students
  • Experience working in a university setting
  • Experience in chaplaincy research
