Mission or Goal of Unit:

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 127-year history, Virginia’s only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and the second oldest dental school in the U.S. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.

Chief Purpose of this position:

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is seeking applicants for a full-time Prosthodontic faculty position in the Department of General Practice, Division of Prosthodontics. This position will serve as the Prosthodontic Graduate Program Director for the School. Salary, rank and tenure will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Position Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include didactic and clinical teaching in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics to dental students and residents; participation in service activities and research; and assisting in the development, implementation and administration of a Graduate Prosthodontic Residency Program

Teaching:
Responsibilities include clinical and didactic teaching of pre-doctoral students and residents, in Fixed Removable, and Implant Prosthodontics. Mentoring undergraduate dental students and residents in preparation for private practice, service and scholarship. Development, implementation and administration of a Graduate Prosthodontics Residency Program. Leadership as a course director at the pre-doctoral level and administrator in Graduate Prosthodontics. All faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creative expression.

Clinical:
Will provide teaching and leadership role in dentistry clinics, seeing patients, working with students and residents, and working collaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best business practices, and increase clini productivity. Participation in the Faculty Private Practice; requires demonstrated ability to build a practice.

Research:
Faculty member may participate in research protocols and will work collaboratively with dental research programs and investigators.

Service:

The faculty member will be expected to serve the Department of General Practice, Division of Prosthodontics in the School of Dentistry, and committees and task forces as requested. In addition, participation in dentistry-related community service activities is strongly encouraged.

Required Qualifications:
  • DDS or DMD Degree from an ADA accredited dental school
  • Certificate or advanced degree in Prosthodontics from an ADA accredited program
  • Board certification required
  • Eligible for a license in Virginia
  • Ability to teach and mentor pre-doctoral dental students and residents in practice or clinical dentistry
  • Demonstrate experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
  • Demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in humanistic environment of learning with the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
  • Demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability, to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in teaching pre-doctoral students and residents in all aspects of Prosthodontics
  • Demonstrated ability to hold administrative positions and effectively manage resources
  • History of Directorship in a Graduate Prosthodontics Program
