Yes Duties and Responsibilities
The Ulijasz lab (www.ulijaszlab.com) at Loyola University Chicago Department of Microbiology and Immunology is recruiting a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on a recently NIH funded project in the area of molecular microbiology. Our lab researches molecular mechanisms of bacterial signal transduction/sensors in both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial pathogens. To accomplish this, we and our collaborators use a wholistic and innovative array of methods, including high-throughput sequencing, protein biochemistry/molecular biology, structural biology, super resolution microscopy and animal infections to reveal novel proteins and pathways that contribute to microbial disease.

Using a novel screening method, metabolic-coupled tn-sequencing (Met-seq; Glanville et al. mSystems, 2021), the Ulijasz lab has recently discovered a subset of protein domains that bind heme and sense and responds to glyoxal; a ubiquitous toxin that results from glycolysis. The accumulation of glyoxal (and methylglyoxal) is thought to be an underlying cause of many human diseases though its irreversible damage to key proteins. In prokaryotes the mechanisms of glyoxal sensing and response are especially enigmatic. The project will entail investigating how this novel family of proteins sensing and responds to glyoxal in the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and possibly other microorganisms, using a series of molecular techniques.

The Ulijasz lab is located at Loyola University Chicago in the western Chicago suburbs. Located in the midwestern United States in the state of Illinois. Chicago is the third largest city in the US, and home to several national sports teams, a top-rated and ethnically diverse restaurant scene and world renowned entertainment. Housing is affordable and the city/surrounding areas offer accessible and safe public transit around the city.
