Position Summary

The Department of Linguisticsat the University at Buffalo is seeking an American Sign Language ( ASL ) Clinical Assistant Professor for a 10-month (academic-year commitment) full-time, non-tenure track position with an initial three-year appointment with possible renewal, contingent on performance, department need, and availability of program funding.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities include teaching four courses per semester; planning classroom lesson plans; grading student work; participating in and recommending course syllabus revisions; developing new courses for the ASL minor; attending department meetings; holding on campus office hours; advising ASL Club students and assisting them in planning events as needed; managing the ASL Honor Society students and hosting the induction ceremony; participating in teaching-related research activities; working on campus-wide and/or external pedagogy initiatives; and providing administrative support to the Director of the ASL program.

The successful candidate must be able to regularly teach in-person classes on the University at Buffalo campus beginning Fall 2022.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned doctorate degree in American Sign Language, ASL Education, ASL Studies, ASL Linguistics, or other related fields.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in ASL .
  • Fluent in written English.
  • Familiarity with second language pedagogy in ASL .
  • Knowledge of ASL grammar and ASL (Deaf) culture.
  • Experience in teaching ASL at the post-secondary level.
  • Must be able to regularly teach in-person classes on the University at Buffalo campus.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least three years of experience in teaching all levels of ASL at the post-secondary level.
  • Familiarity with the TRUE+WAY ASL ( TWA ) curriculum.
  • Familiarity with GoReact.
