Position Summary

Manage the chemical stockroom, assist and support the operation of teaching laboratories
throughout the Hilton science building, coordinate the collection and disposal of chemical waste according to
state and federal laws, maintain and service chemical instrumentation (including computers), and provide
instruction on the use of chemical instrumentation.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Make work related decisions independently (self-directed) within the context of the position and assigned duties;
• Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision;
• Maintain the chemical inventory (record all substances that enter and exit the building);
• Keep records of locations and quantities of chemicals as required by the OSHA laboratory standard;
• Maintain current inventory of laboratory equipment, materials, and laboratory items including gases and cryogenics (liquid helium and nitrogen);
• Purchase supplies and equipment;
• Collect data and provide comparative analysis of scientific instrumentation;
• Support and assist faculty and teaching staff with the chemical aspects of laboratory courses ;
• Assist with coordination and preparation of chemicals, solutions, and chemical equipment for use during laboratory courses;
• Load and operate programs, computer maintenance, data collection and presentation while maintaining Computer literacy;
• Demonstrate care and use of equipment to users;
• Establish an emergency planning and response system;
• Design and maintain written plans and inspections for both Chemical Hygiene Plan and Hazard Communication Plan;
• Establish laboratory and facility safety inspections;
• Maintain spill reports, equipment and emergency protocols;
• Develop and record training efforts;
• Collect and maintain MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets);
• Oversee all chemical-handling procedures including shipping, receiving, storage, use that also includes waste collection, tracking, and disposal according to state and federal regulations;
• Maintain oversight of all chemical safety equipment including hoods in laboratories;
• Ensure chemical safety equipment and protocols are current with state and federal regulations;
• Teach a 1 credit -course in chemical and laboratory safety appropriate for teaching assistances;
• Provide chemical and laboratory safety talks to students when requested;
• Communicate with science faculty regarding special needs and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities;
• Maintain training records and log book of major equipment use;
• Perform or coordinate maintenance of major laboratory equipment including but not limited to NMR, Mass Spectrometer, AA, Fluorimeter, UV-Vis, mass-spectrometer, and Gas Chromatograph;
• Recognize and provide diagnosis of major equipment malfunctions; as appropriate, dismantle and repair; and as necessary contact and schedule outside expertise;
• Perform minor repairs and maintenance of laboratory equipment;
• Train and assist personnel including undergraduate and graduate students on use of laboratory equipment and disposal of hazardous materials, etc.;
• Supervise student workers;
• Perform clerical tasks as needed;
• Serve as intermediary for general laboratory maintenance services such as vacuum, air, and waterlines and hvac;
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned;
• Maintain regular attendance.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Education: BA/BS in the physical science field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters degree in physical science (completed coursework acceptable)
• Experience with maintenance and repair of major chemical instrumentation
• Experience in an academic research or teaching lab
• Experience in the operation of a chemical stockroom
• Training in OSHA guidelines and hazardous waste operations

Special Conditions for Eligibility

• Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and odd hours as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of laboratory and clerical procedures;
• Ability to interface computers with instrumentation;
• Knowledge of basic machine shop type work;
• Knowledge of chemical and laboratory safety;
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment;
• Knowledge of state and federal hazardous waste disposal procedures;
• Knowledge of ordering supplies and maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies/equipment;
• Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets;
• Knowledge of OSHA and NIOSH standards;
• Knowledge of computer hardware and software;
• Ability to operate and maintain computer hardware and software;
• Ability to operate and maintain major chemical laboratory instrumentation;
• Ability to trouble shoot, perform minor repairs and maintain chemistry laboratory equipment;
• Ability to perform math calculations, solution preparations;
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff and students.
• Ability to follow technical instructions, procedure manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; and/or compose routine or specialized reports or forms
• Ability to learn new skills and evolve to keep pace with new technologies

Pay Rate
$16.64 per Hour
