Job Description

Career and Professional Development (CPD) is a centralized office of 31 staff dedicated to educating and supporting students as they explore and choose academic majors and career options, obtain and reflect upon career-related experiences, develop professional presence and essential skills for workplace success, and launch post-graduation career plans, including graduate/professional school and employment.

As a liaison, the Assistant Director for Diversity Initiatives and Community Outreach is responsible for relationship building, communication, and developing programming efforts for the Cultural and Community Centers, Ujima Living Learning Community, Student Opportunities Achievement Resources (SOAR), and Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program (MAOP) as well as advising students and delivering presentations. Members of a College Relations Team will work together to serve undergraduate and graduate students, and recent alumni in a group of colleges. Additionally, team members will work with employers to understand the breadth and depth of experiential and post-graduation opportunities available for students interested in pursuing careers within the scope of their liaison roles.

The Assistant Director will also serve as a point of contact for campus partners working with under-served and under-represented student populations.

Career and Professional Development currently offers the opportunity to work remotely up to 16 hours per week.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Serve as a liaison from Career and Professional Development to the (6) Cultural and Community Centers, Ujima Living Learning Community, Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program (MAOP), Student Opportunities Achievement Resources (SOAR) and other relevant diversity-related programs.
•Assist the leadership team with developing strategic and inclusive resources that would benefit university stakeholders regarding career services.
•Provide one-on-one advising (in-person, virtually, through email, via telephone, etc.) to students in majors within your liaison role and team on topics such as selecting an academic major; choosing a career direction; developing a job search plan; interviewing (including conducting mock interviews); career-related experience (internships/co-op); writing effective resumes and cover letters; and researching companies and graduate schools.
•Develop and deliver presentations, workshops, and programs relevant to your liaison population on topics listed above.
•Develop and execute the department’s emerging diversity and inclusion policies.
•Serve as liaison to other campus programs focused on the retention and success of under-served and under-represented students, such as the Black College Institute (BCI), Hispanic College Institute (HCI), and Gateway Programs.
•Lead and/or serve on institutional and interdepartmental committees that increase Career and Professional Development’s footprint and strategic organizational goals.
•Oversee and collaborate with campus partners to administer Hokie Mentorship Connect affinity discussion board groups to connect students, faculty, and alumni to a variety of career resources.

Required Qualifications

•Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field.
•At least 2 years of career and job search advising/coaching experience and the development and delivery of career-related presentations and programs
•Familiarity with relevant career development theories such as: Holland, Happenstance, and Chaos Theory of Careers.
•Demonstrated ability to foster relationships among a diverse range of constituents including; students, faculty, staff, administrators, and employers.
•Functional knowledge of DEI best practices.
•Demonstrated success in developing cutting edge strategy and driving process improvements regarding diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
•Strong interpersonal, communication, and team skills.
•Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
•Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

•Significant experience providing career advising/coaching within a college/university setting.
•Professional diversity certifications, such as the Certified Diversity Executive, Certified Diversity Professional, or the Certified Diversity Recruiter.
•Experience working with and coordinating student programs.
•Analytical skills that can be leveraged to provide insights to critical decisions.
•Experience working with under-represented and under-served students and/or professionals involved with under-represented and under-served student programming.
•Knowledge of personality theory.
•Experience with Clifton Strengths.
•Experience with a variety of vendor products for the career services field such as Handshake, CareerShift, Candid Career, and GoinGlobal.
