Summary of Responsibilities:

The Senior Associate Director of Development will play a lead role in helping to shape the priorities and operations of the Department of Medicine (DOM) Development Office, and will be responsible for the planning, implementation and management of major and principal fundraising efforts for the benefit of the DOM from friends, grateful patients, and foundations. Serving as a thought partner for the Executive Director of Development and working with senior development staff members across Johns Hopkins, as well as faculty, care providers, administrators, and volunteer leaders, the Senior Associate Director will identify, strategize, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of prospects for clinical divisions, including Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism and Gastroenterology & Hepatology. The Senior Associate Director will also support programming and fundraising for Diversity, Equity and Health Equity in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Chief Diversity Officer and the Executive Director of Development. Travel is associated with this role.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and clinical programs and priorities, and development procedures of Johns Hopkins University, the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and the Department of Medicine, in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-115 prospects with the goal to personally solicit, or arrange for volunteer or institutional solicitation, for major and principal gifts to fund the priority needs of the Department of Medicine and its mission. The focus will be on gifts in the range of $100,000 to $3+ million.
  • Serve as primary development liaison to approximately 20 faculty members in the divisions of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity. Hold recurring meetings to encourage faculty participation in development activities; identify and evaluate giving potential of prospects; coordinate faculty participation in prospect solicitations and stewardship. Keep development team current on faculty research initiatives and funding priorities.
  • Complete 90 or more meaningful prospect and donor substantive interactions per year. Performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, visits, and portfolio penetration, among others.
  • Prepare and direct preparation of case statements, major proposals, outreach and solicitation letters, and other cultivation and informational material for prospects and donors.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Department of Medicine and partner closely with clinical faculty to support programming and fundraising for the assigned clinical areas
  • Collaborate with annual giving and stewardship colleagues in providing oversight and strategy for annual fund, stewardship and constituent engagement activities, to ensure annual goals are met.
  • Represent the Department of Medicine in internal and external committees and advisory groups.
  • Lead and assist with the planning and coordination of major development events including Advisory Board meetings, virtual seminars, professorship dedications and donor recognition events, as needed.

  • Background Experience and Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Five or more years of professional development experience, with a track record of securing five and six figure gifts, preferably in an academic/medical setting. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    • Some planned giving experience preferred.
    • Must possess effective communication skills, be highly organized, have strong written and analytical skills, and be capable of developing solid relationships with faculty, colleagues and grateful patients.
    • Supervisory or significant project management experience preferred.
    • High levels of diplomacy and tact required.
    • Must be able to manage several projects simultaneously, understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis, and flourish in a fast-paced atmosphere.
    • A team mentality with a willingness to participate and collaborate for the greater good is necessary.
