Position & Qualifications

The Hollins film program, one of the most expansive and long-established programs in Virginia, offers students a comprehensive foundation for studying both film studies and film/video production with the aim of developing and supporting film scholarship and creative goals for professional work after graduation. Areas of focus include film history, film theory and analysis, producing, directing, editing, sound design, animation, and cinematography.  

The position carries an undergraduate teaching load of six courses per academic year. Other duties include maintaining scholarly activity in the form of publications, presentations, or creative work; developing curriculum; advising students; participating in department and university service; and engaging with the local community. The position also periodically teaches an additional film studies course for the graduate screenwriting and film studies program that convenes during the summer term.  

The successful candidate will be able to teach all levels of film studies, including required courses such as Introduction to Film as Art, World Cinema, American Cinema, and various film studies electives. Applicants must demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution. The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in film. However, candidates who hold an M.F.A. in a film-related field are also encouraged to apply. A basic understanding of production and p rior teaching experience in film studies at the undergraduate level are strongly preferred.
