Applications are invited for a full-time post-doctoral research associate in Environmental Science in the Covey Lab at Skidmore College. The position is supported through a partnership between Skidmore College and The Soil Inventory Project (TSIP; thesoilinventoryproject.org ), a nonprofit founded and lead by Kristofer Covey, Assistant Professor in the Environmental Studies and Sciences Program. The Soil Inventory Project is focused on measuring and mapping soil carbon in agricultural landscapes using a novel combination of existing distributed technologies. We gather, interpret, and share soil data that can support the transition to a regenerative, resilient and carbon friendly agriculture system.

The TSIP post-doctoral research associate will support data analysis and visualization efforts, unifying data provided by landowners and managers with open data sources. Working collaboratively across TSIP’s data acquisition and analysis efforts, this researcher will contribute to applied research supporting the organization’s sampling design and modeling capabilities.

This researcher will be housed at Skidmore College and work directly with Kristofer Covey and in collaboration with Bruno Basso, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU), the TSIP management team, and our global network of collaborators. In addition to accessing large scale soil carbon datasets and partner networking opportunities, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience for a career at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI) through teaching opportunities and mentorship. Skidmore College is a PUI with outstanding facilities for life science research and teaching located in Saratoga Springs, NY. The initial appointment is for one year with the opportunity of renewal.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Work with TSIP management team to gather, assess, organize, profile, and clean data for geospatial analysis;
  • Code in Google Earth engine and introduce additional analytical tools into processes that can be used across regions;
  • Publish high-impact peer reviewed research;
  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to undergraduate environmental sciences students inside an academic setting.
Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is competitive, includes benefits and is eligible for compensation increases based on performance and available funding resources. Ideal candidates will be located near Skidmore College or able to be present on campus a minimum of three days a week during the academic school year.

Pay Range: Commensurate with experience
