Position Summary

The Institute for Myelin and Glia Explorationis seeking a technician with experience in microscopy to assist with our research laboratories’ activities. Incumbents will prepare and analyze samples for electron microscopy to directly assist a research project or program. Incumbents will also be responsible for the day to day maintenance of laboratory microscopes, including a Leica confocal, a Zeiss Apotome and a FEI electron microscope. Incumbents also will train laboratory staff on the appropriate use of the microscopes. Finally, the candidate will perform a series of tasks to assist in the general functioning of the laboratory.

We are seeking candidates experienced in microscopy, but the possibility of in-lab training on microscopy is also available. Incumbent will receive more direct supervision when experimental or unusual processes are involved and provide support for advanced, unusual or experimental activity; may also direct others in lower classifications in accomplishing tasks; will perform more complex assignments requiring knowledge or experience in handling multiple variables or tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least one year experience in a laboratory environment. Must have working knowledge of typical tests or procedures used in a bio-medical research lab and must have familiarity with the operation of specialized apparatus or equipment. Previous knowledge or an interest in microscopy is strongly valued.
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong attention to detail and methodology in SOPs
  • Previous experience in scientific laboratory
  • Basic knowledge of cellular and molecular biology techniques
  • Positive attitude and interest in research/science

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • Experience in tissue processing and microscopy

Physical Demands

Position may require manual dexterity, lifting and moving materials and/or equipment up to 25lbs.
Salary Range
$35,000 – $45,000
