PRIMARY PURPOSE :
The Part-Time Instructor provides instruction in Political Science, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom.

• This is a part-time (< .50 FTE ) non-benefited position, hired on a term-by-term basis. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
• Part-Time Instructor compensation begins at Step 1 / $622 per load unit (LU). Load Unit is not always equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
• Part-Time Faculty positions are not represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• May include travel throughout the College district.
• Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
• COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
• The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
• As of December 2021, COCC has determined that the College will require all COCC employees, including part-time instructors, be fully vaccinated against COVID -19. We are in the process of implementing this requirement, but new applicants should be aware of this upcoming requirement. Essential Functions:
  1. Provide instruction in Political Science courses in classroom, remote, or online delivery mode using established course outcomes. This includes lecturing and guiding in class writing activities, providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught on any of the four campuses COCC serves, by interactive video chat technology.
  2. Work collaboratively with other Political Science and WLC instructors to foster excellence in teaching. This includes working successfully with colleagues in the department to develop and modify curricula, integrate new instructional methods into courses, and work to assure programmatic curricular coherence.
  3. Attend regular trainings as scheduled by the department or College.
  4. Act as a resource person for students.
  5. Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
  1. Thorough knowledge of field of Political Science based on education and/or experience in the field.
  2. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
  3. Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
  4. Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers, video chat technology (e.g. Zoom) and familiarity with or willingness to learn the learning management system ( LMS ) used at COCC .
  5. Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
  7. Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
  8. Ability to work with other faculty and COCC staff at all levels.
  9. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
  10. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Master’s Degree in the field of Political Science from an accredited institution; or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in academic courses in the field of the primary teaching assignment.
  2. One year of demonstrated teaching experience in Political Science.
