Job Summary:

This position serves as the Director of the Biochemical Genetics (BCG) Laboratory and Assistant Director of the Newborn Screening (NBS) Laboratory at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), Disease Prevention Division (DPD).
This position will carry out technical activities in the Biochemical Genetics and Newborn Screening laboratories. The technical aspects in these two laboratories include, but not limited to: mass spectrometry, amino acid analyzer, enzymatic assays, immunoreaction assays, High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), isoelectric focusing (IEF) electrophoresis and molecular assays. The evaluation of testing results and reports, review and approval of clinical operational and technical policies and procedures.
This position will provide consultation to customers on test results following WSLH and Legal policies set forth by the State of Wisconsin and university. This position will direct the review of clinical quality assurance activities in compliance with regulatory requirements.
The laboratory participates in international, national and local translational research collaborations, and is home to the University of Wisconsin's Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Fellowship in Clinical Biochemical Genetics in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics. This position also includes a joint appointment with the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics & Metabolism in the School of Medicine and Public Health.

The duties of the Biochemical Genetics Director and Newborn Screening, Assistant Director include providing technical oversight, preparation and review of testing reports, client consultation, assay development and undergraduate/graduate/professional teaching/training. As Assistant Director, this position will be carrying out method development and research activities related to the WSLH service and public health mission.

This position is a resource to the newborn screening management team.

Responsibilities:

Principal duties:

70% Clinical Technical Functions:
This position will carry out technical activities in the Biochemical Genetics and Newborn Screening laboratories. The technical oversight in these two laboratories will include, but not limited to: mass spectrometry, amino acid analyzer, enzymatic assays, immunoreaction assays, HPLC, IEF electrophoresis and molecular assays. The evaluation of newborn screening and biochemical genetics testing results, review and approval of clinical operational and technical policies and procedures. Ensures proper dissemination of all analytical results.
This position will provide consultation to customers on test results following WSLH and Legal policies set forth by the State of Wisconsin and University. Assure and provide outreach to customers; this includes hospitals, midwives, pediatricians and other physicians.

In collaboration with the BCG and newborn screening management team reviews, discusses and approves procedures and QA/QI plans. Assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of laboratory procedures. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies. Participates in the development of business planning. Stays current with all UW and WSLH policies and procedures that affect the work and operation of the Disease Prevention Department.

Provides consultation with clients regarding test orders and results. Participates in continuing professional development programs. Collaborates with national, state, professional, public health and university service organizations. Perform activities that will lead/maintain academic promotion. Participate in Mentor committee activities within the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Department of Pediatrics. Maintains up to date knowledge in the field of genetics with expertise in newborn screening and biochemical genetics while maintaining ABMGG certification.

30% Teaching, Research and Academic Activities:
Performs genetics related research activities as they relate to the service and public health mission of UW and WSLH. Collaborates with NBS Director, UW faculty, researchers and WSLH staff on future collective NBS/BCG projects.

The candidate will contribute to the UW-Madison teaching mission by presenting lectures to undergraduate and graduate course(s). Provide outreach lectures to the states partners in public health, clinical and laboratory committees. Engages in research mentoring of undergraduate, honors students, Genetics Counseling graduate students, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Collaborates with faculty and staff across campus with the Center for Human Genomics and Precision Medicine.

In addition, provides training to the WSLH Newborn Screening and Biochemical Genetics Staff. Provides training for students, fellows and residents. Publishes in peer reviewed journals. Represents the organization by giving presentations at professional conferences.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
Ph.D. or M.D. in Genetics or related field is required.

Qualifications:

License/certification:
Certification or completion of an American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) fellowship in Clinical Biochemical Genetics or (achievement of board certification is required within three exam cycles).

Board eligible/certification is a condition of on-going employment.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
A minimum of two years postdoctoral laboratory experience in Clinical Biochemical Genetics is required. Additional experience working in a newborn screening and/or clinical biochemical genetics laboratory is preferred.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential as the position requires active communication with clinicians and laboratory staff.
