The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for Catalog Editor for the Division of Academic Affairs. This is a full-time, permanent staff position.

The Catalog Editor is a team member of the Office of Academic Affairs, led by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Provost is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of UNC Charlotte’s academic programs, research, and public service. The Office works closely with the Deans of the Colleges, Graduate School, and academic support units, and has responsibility for making final recommendations to the Chancellor, the Board of Trustees, and the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

The Catalog Editor is responsible for the content, design, and production of the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs, as well as overall curriculum management, training, and support. The person in this position manages various complex and technically advanced projects and processes, coordinating and directing curriculum implementation across all colleges, departments, and academic units.

The Catalog Editor is responsible for the content of the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. The position directly reports to the Assistant Provost and primary responsibilities include: 

CURRICULUM REVIEW/MANAGEMENT: Review and analyze complex curricular proposals, supporting the curriculum and course approval system, tracking proposals through various workflows, ensuring proposals comply with academic regulations; design and produce Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs; collaborate with faculty, department chairs, associate deans, academic advisors and the Offices of the Registrar and Assessment and Accreditation.

TECHNOLOGY UTILIZATION: Produce catalogs using Acalog and Curriculog (web-based system) and serve as campus Acalog Manager and back-up Curriculog Manager; determine and employ innovative uses of Acalog to improve the delivery of the catalog including integration with other campus systems (Banner and DegreeWorks) and the evaluation and effectiveness of the system as well as facilitate the API between Acalog and departmental websites; use web-based tools and/or instructional design systems to manage workflows, store documents or data, and deliver procedural instructions and training; apply technical knowledge to all projects and troubleshoot technical challenges and serve as a key resource; identify and implement best practice strategies to increase effectiveness and efficiency. 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Manage production of Catalogs and development of curricula through coordination and direction across all colleges, departments, and academic units; coordinate, monitor and supervise work of departmental and collegiate faculty and administrators who propose catalog edits; coordinate projects and meet deadlines for publication schedule; create and improve program applications or other procedures, workflows, and status updates; independently set and manage project timelines, resources, and implementation.

CONSULTING/TRAINING: Educate college deans, departmental heads, and/or undergraduate/graduate program coordinators/directors on effective and accurate curriculum and program design; coordinate and maintain training program and associated documents for academic advisors, students, faculty and administrators on catalog features, usage, and curriculum structure, tools and processes set by faculty governance committees (Acalog and Curriculog).

COPYWRITING/COPYEDITING: Proofread, design, coordinate review, and produce Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs annually; write new copy where necessary to bridge any gaps or make information clear and consistent; establish editorial standards and enforce university and governance standards and protocols while reviewing content; graphically design cover, look, layout, sections, and content of each catalog.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in a closely related field and at least three years of experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed in the area of assignment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant higher education experience beyond three years and experience working with university curriculum development, implementation, and/or advising.
  • Experience with Acalog/Curriculog.
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with administrators, colleagues, managers, faculty, and staff and to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders, including campus technical staff, colleagues, and vendors.
  • Resourcefulness and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to thoughtfully contribute to the goal of and best practices for diversity, inclusion, equity, and cultural competency. 
  • Demonstrated competency with Windows and/or Mac operating systems and overall curiosity and willingness to learn various technology applications and think creatively about their usage.
  • Proficiency at the intermediate-to-advanced level in Microsoft Office and Google workplace applications and the ability to quickly learn/master campus-specific systems and tools (Banner, DegreeWorks).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with or capacity to learn about industry standard tools used for creating digital media content for user instructions and catalog design (Adobe Creative Suite, Canvas, Camtasia).
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills enhanced by the application of technology tools and software.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment to discern appropriate actions, demonstrate initiative and proactively anticipate needs and work with minimal supervision to make independent decisions.
  • Positive, personable attitude with a professional, resourceful demeanor.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt as the programming environment of the division, or technology tools and systems evolve.
