Engineering Advising is responsible for the first-year matriculation process, College of Engineering Orientation programming, the Peer Advising Program, coordination of the first-year Engineering Seminar, Early Intervention program outreach, sophomore major affiliation process, specialty advising for study abroad, pre-health, internal transfer, and the Independent Major, and assisting with the development of the College’s Undergraduate Handbook, as well as other publications and communications. Engineering Advising team members primarily advise first- and second-year students and are responsible for making appropriate referrals to university resources, serving as liaisons to academic departments, interpreting college and major curriculum requirements as well as college and university policies and procedures, and maintaining timely and accurate documentation and records.

 

What you will do:

This position reports to the Director and collaborates with the Engineering Advising team to ensure that engineering students have access to information and support as they navigate the undergraduate experience and strive to achieve their academic and personal goals.

 

The Assistant/Associate Director will also provide developmental advising related to course and major selection, academic performance, success strategies, and personal health and wellbeing. They will deliver accurate and current information to students regarding major, college, and university degree requirements, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. They will work in partnership with engineering Faculty Advisors, Peer Advisors, college leadership, administration, and student services staff, as well as faculty from other Cornell colleges and schools and various other University entities, including Cornell Health, Counseling and Psychological Services, Cornell Police, the Dean of Students Office, University Crisis Managers, Residential Life, and the Office of Global Learning. Situations may require communicating with parents of undergraduate students, where the behavior and the safety of the student are of concern. They will serve as a member of the Committee on Academic Standards, Petitions, and Credit, which includes the review of students’ academic records and implementation of appropriate action. They will assist with review of voluntary, health, and required leaves of absence as necessary.

 

This position is full-time and is located in Ithaca, New York. This position is expected to work on the Ithaca campus as well as perform a portion of the work remotely as needed under current conditions.

 

What We Need:

A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of academic advising experience in higher education or other closely related experience required. Knowledge of the engineering curriculum and profession are not prerequisites for this position.

 

The successful candidate should demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills, a strong work ethic, knowledge of student development theory and practice, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a high-performing team. The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to multitask in a highly competitive, fast-paced academic environment, have a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and judgment, show attention to detail, and can interact with faculty, staff, and students.

 

What We Prefer:

A Master’s degree in advising, higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, psychology, social work, human development, student development, or related area and 5 or more years of experience strongly preferred.

 

Experience advising students from STEM disciplines, triaging students in crisis, and utilizing technology in advising practice. Experience with high level project management, coordinating logistics, and oversight of peer advisor/mentor programs. Knowledge of student information systems, such as PeopleSoft, and customer relationship management platforms, such as Salesforce. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro, and web content management, such as Drupal.
