Job Summary

The College of Sciences and Mathematics ( COSAM ) at Auburn University is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant Director in the COSAM Outreach Office. The Assistant Director will assist in directing, overseeing, and coordinating the day-to-day operations for the unit’s STEM outreach programs.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions include but are not limited to:

  1. Manages, implements and provides program oversight for STEM outreach programs. Target audiences include K-12 students, teachers, administrators, parents of K-12 students, and the general public.
  2. Supervises and directs the daily efforts of the unit’s staff, volunteers, and paid student workforce necessary to implement the unit’s programs, events, and initiatives. Additionally, hires needed contracted and TES employees to accomplish unit’s goals, particularly for expanded summer program schedule.
  3. Assists the Director in the formulation of the unit’s long-range and strategic plans and leads the development and implementation of program assessment and evaluation. Consults with COSAM faculty and K-12 school personnel to determine needs and develop assessment methods used to develop, design and deliver outreach programs.
  4. Assists in providing daily administrative oversight of the unit to include forecasting, developing, reconciling and monitoring of the budget; negotiates and interprets contracts with vendors for goods and services.
  5. Coordinates and plans summer trainings and academic year trainings of professionals and teachers requiring training for program participation (e.g., BEST Robotics, AP Institute, Science in Motion, grant-based programs tied to the unit, etc.). Works with Regional In-Service Center and the AL State Department of Education to document and manage professional development credits for teachers participating in COSAM Outreach sponsored training.
  6. Develops brochures, flyers, public service announcements, letters, websites, presentations, manuals, and other materials for the effective promotion of COSAM outreach efforts. Uses sound professional judgment on material design, production, and distribution, and exercises fiscal management on marketing activities.
  7. Generates post-event reports and maintains databases for the department to provide information to various Auburn departments. Assists in the development and delivery of proposals, reports, and professional information and support to other offices and departments. Provides regular status reports on programs to director of unit.
  8. Develops and instructs age-appropriate STEM -related curricular topics for a broad audience, including K-12 students and teachers, and the general public.
  9. Identifies grant opportunities and assists director in grant proposal development. Provides consultation to COSAM faculty and K-12 school personnel for project design and implementation, and curriculum development. Supports faculty grant activity pertaining to outreach efforts as needed. Stimulates the outreach community to pursue opportunities by cultivating contacts and keeping the outreach community informed of funding opportunities.
  10. Serves as a liaison for all participating departments within the college and with other university outreach support offices as related to K-12 STEM programs. Serves on committees or boards that support the mission of the unit.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Proven ability to develop and implement K-12 STEM outreach programs or curriculum. Experience in STEM education, which could include teaching and/or mentoring K-20 students, program/event development and implementation, coordinating competitions and camps, and teacher training or conferences. Demonstrated academic leadership and experience relevant to the position. Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of educational programs, services, and systems is required. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills; ability to foster and maintain positive professional relationships with appropriate stakeholders (faculty, industry sponsors, teachers, K-12 and higher ed administrators) is crucial; ability to interact and communicate effectively with university and K-12 faculty, staff, students, administrators, and the community; commitment to equal opportunity and multi-cultural diversity; and strong organizational and computer skills. Qualified candidate must have a positive disposition and work well in a team.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include: A Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution in Science, Science Education, Math, Math Education, Engineering, Elementary Education, Communications, Public Relations, Business or related fields.

Demonstrated ability to work well with children; proven ability to lead others in achieving a common goal; experience with grant writing and/or proven success at acquiring external funding for programs.

Experience related to the STEM field with two of those years in practical educational experience related to STEM . Experience in Program and Event planning for educational STEM events and trainings to include program oversite, marketing, record-keeping, and budget tracking.
