Job Summary

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Education (SOE) is seeking an Assistant Professor of Science Education. UT Tyler is a Carnegie R:2 institution located in Tyler Texas with satellite campuses in Longview and Palestine. UT Tyler is also home to the University Academy Laboratory Schools, K-12 STEM Academies designed to provide a high-fidelity inquiry-based clinical setting.  The SOE provides multiple pathways to teacher certification. Pathways include traditional teacher preparation for EC-6 candidates, UTeach STEM Teacher preparation (4-8 and 7-12), teacher residencies, and an online graduate option. The SOE C&I Masters has a STEM option. The SOE also houses an EdD in School Improvement. The SOE is home to the Ingenuity Center, a STEM Education Research and Development Center.

 

Essential Functions

  • Pursue an active scholarly research agenda.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in teacher education and curriculum and instruction.
  • Seek grant funds to support research and teaching activities.
  • Advise and mentor graduate students.
  • Actively support local area schools.
  • Contribute to the university, the East Texas community, and the profession through service and outreach activities.

 

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in Science Education or Curriculum and Instruction focused on Science Education.
  • Evidence of ability to conduct a focused and sustained research agenda.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of K-12 classroom experience.
  • Ability to collaborate with STEM Education faculty in SOE and STEM Colleges for research and pursuit of external funding.
  • Evidence of preparation to teach pedagogy, Science content for educators, and science pedagogical content knowledge.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of scholarship as measured by peer-reviewed products.
  • Evidence of successful university teaching in methods courses or Science courses targeted for educators.
  • Evidence of successful K-12 Science classroom teaching.
  • Expertise in Science teacher education, STEM Education, instructional coaching, School improvement.
  • Ability to teach face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
