The Opportunity
Bucknell University is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Development Officer/Senior Development Officer, Leadership Gifts. This is an exciting time to join the University Advancement team, as Bucknell prepares to launch its next campaign. Candidates will be hired into the Development Officer or Senior Development Officer role following review of their skills and experience against the minimum qualifications for the positions.

About the Position
Bucknell University is seeking a self-motivated and detail-oriented individual to manage a regionally-based portfolio of major and principal gift prospects. This position will be considered for remote work pending approval of the specific work location in compliance with University's HR and Payroll requirements.

The Development Officer/Senior Development Officer will inspire constituents to support the University's mission in the following ways:
  • Build relationships and work closely with prospects and donors through the cycle of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Solicit and close gifts of $100,000 or more to meet defined metrics.
  • Travel extensively (including air travel and travel to major metropolitan areas) for consistent and strategic prospect meetings designed to move prospects through the donor continuum.
  • Promote the University's fundraising priorities through excellent working relationships with faculty, senior academic leaders, trustees, University volunteers, and UA colleagues. This includes preparing strategic briefings prior to visits and arranging for appropriate follow up-to-visits and events.
  • Plan and host campus visits for major prospects as a key step in their preparation for leadership giving.
  • Work collaboratively with the Annual Fund team to incrementally increase annual fund support.
  • Partner with Gift Planning colleagues to maximize donor-driven charitable giving opportunities and benefits.
  • Maintain accuracy of donor and prospect records, including updating opportunities, contact reports, and prospect plan steps, in a prompt and timely fashion.

This position reports to the Associate Director, Leadership Gifts.

Development Officer
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of successful experience in fundraising, sales, or related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Practical application and experience with technology such as database functions/reports and Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrable track record of creative and collaborative strategy that results in successful closures of gifts/sales/related experience.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact, discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality inside and outside of University Advancement.
  • Ability to function independently, yet relate comfortably, on a multifaceted fundraising team.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (including air travel and travel to major metropolitan areas) for consistent and strategic prospect meetings.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of major gift experience with a successful track record of closing six- and seven-figure gifts in a higher education setting.
  • Working knowledge of the field of gift planning, including gifts of complex assets, gift vehicles, federal and state tax considerations surrounding charitable giving, and the financial considerations involved in administering planned gifts.

Senior Development Officer
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of successful experience in fundraising, sales, or related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Practical application and experience with technology such as database functions/reports and Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrable track record of creative and collaborative strategy that results in successful closures of gifts/sales/related experience.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact, discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality inside and outside of University Advancement .
  • Ability to function independently, yet relate comfortably, on a multifaceted fundraising team.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (including air travel and travel to major metropolitan areas) for consistent and strategic prospect meetings.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) years of leadership and major gift experience with a successful track record of closing six- and seven-figure gifts in a higher education setting.
  • Working knowledge of the field of gift planning, including gifts of complex assets, gift vehicles, federal and state tax considerations surrounding charitable giving, and the financial considerations involved in administering planned gifts.

Additional Requirements for Both Levels:
This position requires occasional evening and weekend work to support University Advancement's campus events including, but not limited to, Family Weekend, Reunion, and Scholarship Day.

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt, benefits eligible position. Exempt employees are required to work as much time as is necessary to fulfill the requirements of the position without additional compensation, even if the work is performed beyond standard work hours.
