The Department of Geography, Planning, & Sustainability welcomes applications for a full-time lecturer with expertise in Environmental and Sustainability Studies who is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and student mentoring. The position begins Fall 2022.

This non-tenure-track 10-month teaching position includes benefits, renewable multiyear contracts, and the opportunity for promotion to Senior and Master Lecturer. The Environmental and Sustainability Studies Lecturer will teach 24 credit hours over 2 semesters at undergraduate and graduate levels. This lecturer will teach introductory and advanced courses in Environmental and Sustainability Studies that incorporate both social and physical science perspectives, methods courses, research seminars, and upper-level specialty courses that the lecturer develops. Up to 6 of these 24 credit hours may be assigned to equivalent load-hours to support non-teaching administration of the Environmental and Sustainability Studies undergraduate major, which is the department’s largest undergraduate program, as well as a graduate certificate in Sustainability Studies. The position also carries the option to teach overload during the Spring and Fall semester and to teach during the summer and winter sessions for additional compensation.

The successful candidate must provide clear evidence of excellence in teaching, including a mixture of the following: student course evaluations, innovative assignments and lesson plans, assessment procedures, course syllabi, peer observations, teaching portfolio, and/or other evidence deemed suitable by the applicant.

Lecturers are expected to contribute to departmental and university service through membership on department, school, and/or university-level committees, advising student organizations, coordinating introductory course offerings, and/or assisting with curriculum development among various potential contributions.

Scholars hired in the School of Earth & Environment will have superior communication skills, will have demonstrated a deep commitment to sharing their scholarship with the public, and will possess a passion for advocating for, and advancing solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises. As part of teaching and outreach, School of Earth & Environment faculty are encouraged to develop community science and teaching experiences in the nearby Edelman Fossil Park & Museum and affiliated Scotland Run Park. We are seeking dedicated agents of change, and a willingness to work with governments, NGOs, and industry to solve real-world problems is desired.

The Department of Geography, Planning, & Sustainability includes 6 tenured full-time faculty members, 1 tenured faculty member with a joint appointment in the Department of Art, 3 other full-time lecturers, and a 4th lecturer with a joint appointment in the Department of Writing Arts. The department offers four undergraduate degree programs (BA in Environmental and Sustainability Studies; BA in Geography; BS in Geographical Information Science, and a BS in Community and Environmental Planning) and a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning. The department serves approximately 175 majors spread across the programs, and teaches about 1,100 students in departmental courses each semester.

Qualifications:

A master's degree or higher in Geography, Environmental Studies, or a closely related discipline is required. A Ph.D. is preferred.
