Job Summary/Basic Function:

Position Summary

The Dean of Nursing of the Wheaton College Nursing Program is a 12-month contract position, reviewed yearly and renewable each year based on satisfactory performance. The Dean is a staff position that holds faculty status as a non-teaching and non-tenured faculty member. This individual is employed by the college and reports to the Office of the Provost. The Dean is vested with the administrative authority for the development and oversight of the BSN program, as well as the hiring and evaluation of nursing faculty to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes. The Dean has advising responsibilities and ensures academic rigor and curricular alignment with the overall vision, mission, expected outcomes of the college, as well as with the AACN Baccalaureate Essentials and the standards of the appropriate Boards of Nursing and of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ).

The Dean is responsible for overall program design, development, and delivery, with the goal of creating the optimal student experience and desired student outcomes. In collaboration with a core team across several functional areas of the college and the Office of the Provost, the Dean will focus on several areas of the program to ensure quality: marketing, curriculum, content, faculty, student support, assessment, and operations.

The desire to care for others in a meaningful and practical manner aligns seamlessly with Wheaton College’s mission, as well as with its strategic vision for diverse and inclusive excellence. Students will be able to express this objective through a Nursing Program that combines intellectual rigor with experiential practice and a deep understanding of social justice, equity, and global connectedness. The Dean of Nursing should enable this intention by supporting the many parameters that construct a competitive nursing program, while outlining paths for students toward leadership in diverse healthcare environments.

Curriculum/ Content
: The Dean is responsible for the overall quality and delivery of the program, evaluating materials and instructional plans.

● Responsible for ensuring the appropriate use of research-based evaluative criteria in the assessment of all nursing courses in collaboration;
● Evaluating the translation of appropriate level of clinical education meets the development of the student learning outcomes;
● Maintaining and overseeing, as well as developing and sustaining partnerships with student placement sites;
● Developing curriculum and academic policies that align with the AACN Baccalaureate Essentials, CCNE Standards, and the appropriate Boards of Registration in Nursing.

Faculty : The Dean oversees all faculty vetting toward hire with specific attention to credentials and experience needs by course. The Dean is responsible for:

● Recommending and evaluating future/potential program faculty to the provost for hire
●Managing, evaluating, and leading the program’s faculty. The Dean will manage all full/part time faculty to ensure successful outcomes through each content expert role, and will be responsible for conducting annual evaluations as well as periodic reviews as needed
● Serving as a resource for the development of faculty
● Ensuring formative assessments of faculty for teaching abilities including formal observations, recommending opportunities for improvement,
● Leading the program faculty meetings;
● Facilitating and participating in ongoing faculty continuing education.

Student Support
: The Dean collaborates with all Wheaton College offices that support student success to address student concerns and needs, and at times respond directly to students and lead the appropriate actions.

Marketing and Admissions
: The Dean is responsible for ensuring that program information used in marketing and promotional materials accurately reflects the curriculum and quality of the program. This involves ongoing reviews of web copy, promotional materials, blogs, webinar content, etc. The Dean is also expected to participate in admissions open-houses and to take actions to recruit and retain strong applicants to the program.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Program Duties and Responsibilities:


Administrative


● Direct the BSN Program: oversee curriculum development and evaluation
● Manage, and evaluate all full time/part time faculty positions
● Attend Wheaton College meetings as determined by the College Faculty Legislation and Handbook and the Office of the Provost
● Develop the application for Board(s) approval
● Lead the CCNE accreditation and re-accreditation process including preparing the self-study report
● Participate in the national dialogue on nursing education; present at national/international conferences
● Spearhead scholarly programs on issues related to nursing and interdisciplinary healthcare efforts
● Participate in the selection of instructional materials, library resources, and equipment for learning resource center
● Participate in the development of a simulation center/lab
● Maintain awareness of appropriate clinical experiences to meet the stated course objectives.

Ongoing Operations : To ensure the program’s quality, scale and profitability, the Dean must demonstrate a command of strategic planning and budget. This is achieved as follows:
● Collaborating with the Offices of the President, the Provost, and Budget and Finance to understand budget impact of decisions and operations, including the preparation and administration of the program budget and resource allocation.
● Participating in all aspects of planning and coordination of the program including meetings and activities across stakeholder groups, to meet the program goals
● Creating a plan and regional approach to monitoring sites, preceptors, and students during clinical preceptorships
● Developing and leading a Program Advisory Council of program stakeholders that will meet once a year.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualifications
Candidates for the Dean of Nursing will serve as the Chief Nursing Officer and must meet all the college requirements for academic degrees, experience in teaching at the college level, and clinical or research achievement equivalent at a preferred rank of Associate Professor.

The Dean must possess:
● Active and unencumbered Registered Nurse License in Massachusetts
● A minimum of an earned Master’s degree in nursing or an earned entry level doctoral degree in nursing. An earned DNP or PhD with MS in Nursing is preferred
● A minimum of five years full time clinical nursing experience within the past eight years,
● Significant experience teaching Nursing or Nursing related courses;
  • Expertise appropriate to academic administrative responsibilities;

● Evidence of continued and progressive professional development in the academic and professional communities;
● Ongoing scholarly activity.
