ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR AND CHIEF OF STAFF FOR VCCFO

Salary Range: Commensurate with Experience

 

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor & Chief Financial Officer (VCCFO) and serving as a member of their senior management team, the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff works as a partner to the VCCFO in all University activities. The Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff makes decisions on behalf of the VCCFO and represents them in discussions with their senior management team, Vice Chancellors, the Office of the President, the Academic Senate, and other campus senior leadership regarding policies, initiatives, and operational issues pertaining to the campus. Represents the VCCFO to internal and external constituencies and is charged with decision-making on behalf of the VCCFO.

 

The Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff plays an essential role in internal communication and engagement with various campus constituencies. The position adds to the informed perspective of the VCCFO and facilitates the implementation of activities within the Vice Chancellor's Office and between the Vice Chancellor's Office and academic and administrative departments.

 

The position manages the staff and activities of the Vice Chancellor's office staff. The Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the VC&CFO units, with annual expenditures of approximately $400M. Has responsibility for all matters regarding budget and financial planning and analysis, including resource allocations, budget development, and staffing control. Serves as the Vice Chancellor's representative regarding human resource and space management matters with responsibility for coordinating with the department functional managers and central offices on initiatives that are vice chancellor-wide or across department lines.

 

The position directs and manages the assignment of action items to senior administrators and is responsible for helping the VCCFO manage priorities. In addition, the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff advises and provides analytical support and leadership on a variety of projects of importance to the campus. The position maintains confidentiality of privileged information and performs a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Thorough knowledge of the organizational and cultural environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations, and constraints.

• Knowledge of the UC San Diego culture is preferred.

• Excellent consulting, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills. Excellent ability to establish mission and goals at the macro-level and to manage or influence resources to deliver on these goals.

• Superb communication skills. Ability to strategically engage and to interact effectively with multiple and complex stakeholders. Ability to interact tactfully and diplomatically, yet assertively, with all segments of the campus and community. Skilled in recognizing politically sensitive situations and in resolving conflicts.

• Ability to organize assigned tasks, prioritize heavy workload, develop comprehensive timetables and strategies to meet multiple and constantly changing deadlines.

• Demonstrated ability to give appropriate counsel about complex business and financial matters, analyses, and recommendations clearly and concisely to a wide variety of individuals, at all levels, within and outside the university.

• Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality, accuracy and attention to detail to respond to unexpected job demands and keep pace with rapidly changing priorities and deadlines.
