Job Summary/Purpose:

PRIMARY PURPOSE :
To provide instruction in a range of lower division General Physics (algebra and calculus levels) and General Science: Physics lecture-and-lab courses in support of a range of transfer programs in engineering, pre-health, physical sciences, and life sciences. To work with other faculty to design and deliver such courses. Courses may be assigned at any of the COCC campuses (Bend, Redmond, Madras, or Prineville) or online in synchronous or asynchronous modes. Classes may be scheduled for day or evening hours.

• This is a part-time (< .50 FTE ) non-benefited position, hired on a term-by-term basis. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
• Part-Time Instructor compensation begins at Step 1 / $622 per load unit (LU). Load Unit is not always equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
• Part-Time Faculty positions are not represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• May include travel throughout the College district.
• Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
• COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
• The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
• As of December 2021, COCC has determined that the College will require all COCC employees, including part-time instructors, be fully vaccinated against COVID -19. We are in the process of implementing this requirement, but new applicants should be aware of this upcoming requirement.

Essential Functions:
  1. Provide instruction in Physics, teaching both classroom and laboratory sessions for assigned courses.
  2. Provide individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress outside of class.
  3. Utilize relevant technology to aid instruction, including the College Learning Management System (Canvas) as well as other systems, to assist with student learning.
  4. Collaborate with others in the Department to develop and modify curricula, integrate new instructional methods into courses, and assure curricular coherence with other programmatic coursework.
  5. Act as a general resource person to help students.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
  1. Demonstrable proficiency in teaching Physics as found at a community college. This includes evidence of an ongoing pursuit of activities intended to improve teaching skills.
  2. Thorough knowledge of the field of Physics in the broadest possible sense.
  3. Ability to use a variety of instructional methods to provide meaningful learning opportunities for all students.
  4. Ability to work constructively with and contribute to a diverse workplace.
  5. Ability to use a variety of teaching techniques and instructional methods as are appropriate to provide meaningful learning opportunities for all students.
  6. Ability to work collegially with other faculty, staff and administrative employees.
  7. Ability to observe, direct, and supervise students in laboratory and field settings.
  8. Ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and commit to assisting the College and Department in work to better serve these students.
  9. Ability to use computers to produce and manage documents and data.
  10. Ability to design, develop, and maintain instructional programs and curricula in Physics.
  11. Ability to communicate effectively orally, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
  12. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
  13. Ability to review, understand, and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or the professional literature.
  14. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations as required.
  15. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.


Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Master’s Degree in Physics or closely related field from an accredited institution; or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in academic courses in Physics.
  2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching, or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.
  3. Coursework/teaching experience in teaching lower division Physics coursework.
