Bucknell University is seeking a Writing & Teaching Consultant to join the team! The primary activities of this position are offering individualized feedback on writing to students, faculty and staff; providing faculty development in the teaching of writing through workshops and consultations; training and supervising peer tutors in writing; leading workshops for students; and helping to administer the Writing Across the Curriculum Program and manage the daily operations of the Writing Center. A Writing and Teaching Consultant supports the Bucknell Writing Program through two major avenues: faculty development and learner-centered work with students. Faculty development efforts include conducting writing across the curriculum (and related pedagogical) workshops as well as one-on-one consulting with faculty on course design and their own professional writing. Learner-centered work with students includes one-on-one and small group tutoring, conducting workshops on writing, and training and supervising a corps of approximately 30 peer tutors.
Job Duties:
Teaching and Consulting in Writing
- Consulting with members of the University community, especially
students, in writing, oral communication, learning strategies,
reading, and collaborative learning
- Conducting a peer tutoring program in writing
- Teaching courses in tutoring and, when appropriate, other
courses
- Teaching non-credit courses in tutoring writing (when
necessary)
- Conducting workshops and/or individual consultations about
writing resumes, application essays, honors theses, and master's
theses, and other relevant topics
Faculty Development - Leading workshops on teaching writing
- Consulting with individual faculty members on course
design
- Consulting with individual faculty members on their own writing
projects
- Collaborating in offering faculty workshops for the Common Core
Curriculum and/or other relevant programs or units
- Representing the Writing Center and Program in other faculty
development efforts
- Demonstrating teaching methods for faculty in their own
classes
Writing Center and Program Administration - Managing daily operations of the Writing Center at its two
locations and online
- Managing a peer tutoring program in writing
- Supervising a corps of about thirty peer writing
consultants
- Assisting in oversight of the development and approval process
for writing courses across the curriculum (known as W
courses)
- Reviewing W courses, when serving on the Writing Across the
Curriculum (WAC) Council or upon request
- Collaborating with a faculty advisory committee (the WAC
Council) in developing Writing Program policies
- Consulting with students, faculty, and administrators regarding
Writing Program requirements
- Collaborating with the Teaching and Learning Center, the Office
of Accessibility Resources, and other units and programs in regard
to inclusive pedagogies
- Representing the Writing Center on committees and in other
areas of the University
- Developing long-term plans for the Writing Center
- Assessing and compiling regular reports of Writing
Center/Program activities
- Conducting a peer partnership program for non-native speakers
of English
- Generating, curating, and updating resources on writing and/or
teaching for students and faculty members
- Contributing to and maintaining the Writing Center and Writing
Program's online presence (via the website, Moodle, Google docs,
social media, etc.)
- Publicizing and marketing the Writing Center and Writing
Program on campus
- Assisting in management of web-based tutor scheduling systems
and online consulting processes
Scholarly Activity and University Service - Continuing engagement with research and best practices in
Writing Across the Curriculum, Writing Studies, and other relevant
areas, e.g., inclusive and antiracist pedagogies
- Participation in conferences
- Publication (when feasible)
- Membership on search committees, advisory boards, etc.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Three years of experience teaching writing and consulting individually with student writers; master's degree required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent teaching, tutoring and interpersonal skills; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; excellent writing and speaking abilities; flexibility and openness to learning; and willingness to collaborate in busy learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of rhetoric and composition research, Universal Design for Learning, TESL, oral communication pedagogy, disability studies, inclusive and antiracist pedagogies, experience working with multilingual writers and writers with disabilities, and familiarity with writing in several academic disciplines and Writing Across the Curriculum.
Work Type:
This is a full-time, 40-hour per week, 11-month, exempt, benefits eligible position.
