Job Summary:
The Director of Instructional Design will implement, manage, and evaluate integrated instructional development projects and related support for faculty and staff in the areas of instructional design, assessment, instructional technology applications and evaluation.
  • Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission, and values, and contributes to the development of the Online Education Department.
  • Plan, implement, and manage course development and redevelopment processes and timelines.
  • Apply pedagogical principles and learning theories to create engaging course designs.
  • Lead, coach, manage and develop a team of experienced on-site and remote instructional designers.
  • Retain a pool of Freelance Instructional Designers we can rely on as needed.
  • Work with Program Coordinators and Academic departments on the yearly development plan.
  • Coordinate CCG course development processes.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director of Operations on project timelines, ID workload, and confirming availability of course developers.
  • Train and mentor Instructional Design staff in the use of D2L in accordance with best practices, industry standards, and in alignment with Online Education templates and expectations.
  • Maintains awareness of best practices, emerging technologies, and new potentials in educational technology that may be adopted as new and emerging instructional media, technologies, pedagogies and practices.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, or a related field.
  • Experience developing and redesigning face-to-face, fully online, and hybrid/blended courses using sound principles of instructional design and project management.
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in working with learning management/online learning platforms such as D2L Brightspace. Demonstrated experience with HTML5/CSS3; multimedia (including images, audio, and video); Adobe Creative Suite; or related tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of online pedagogy, learning theories, instructional design models, and assessment methods.
  • Significant knowledge of and experience with current learning management systems and other instructional technologies.
  • Willingness to learn and follow the design process, standards, and templates used at Columbia College.
  • Knowledge and experience with WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with technology as it relates to teaching and learning or equivalent education.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a higher education setting working with faculty and instructional designers.
  • Supervisory experience.
