Basic Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
Santa Barbara City College is seeking two full-time, tenure track
faculty members positions in Disability Services and Programs for
Students (DSPS) to start in Fall 2022. In 2009, SBCC was designated
as an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting our responsibility
to support and serve the needs of our Latina/o/x students.
Moreover, given our overall student population, the ideal candidate
will demonstrate a commitment to join a department that is
dedicated to the use of curriculum and pedagogy that shares SBCC's
commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse
post-traditional student population.
A full-time, tenure track, 10-month faculty position will be
available in the Disability Services and Programs for Students
(DSPS) department effective Fall 2022. The Specialist will provide
disability related counseling to SBCC students; facilitate the
interactive process to identify functional limitations, fundamental
requirements and reasonable accommodations to ensure equal
educational access; provide and document appropriate services and
maintain accurate records; refer students to other appropriate
campus and community services; provide curriculum development and
instruction that focuses on access and retention; implement the
California Community Colleges' Learning Disabilities Eligibility
& Services Model by assessing students to determine eligibility
for disability-related accommodations and services; provide
expertise to the college as a Learning Disabilities Specialist by
advocating for students, consulting with colleagues, and
collaborating with instructors; develop disability awareness
training for the campus and community; consult with DSPS
colleagues, faculty and administration regarding access to
facilities, technology, instructional programs, college
information, and student services; provide expertise for college
personnel in meeting the guidelines of federal and state disability
laws; participate in the governance of the college via committee
assignments; engage in professional development activities that
include diversity, equity, accessibility, inclusion and social
justice; participate fully in department responsibilities.
*Note: this position will work a distributed work calendar that
begins on July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023 along with an additional 20
days beyond the 10-month faculty contract. Schedule to be approved
by the department chair and Dean.
Representative Duties
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Commitment to the community college
mission.
An understanding of the implications a Hispanic-Serving
designation suggests for institutional, departmental, and
instructional practices.
An understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of
racially and/or ethnically minoritized students within Higher
Education shape patterns of participation and outcomes within the
classroom.
Evidence of working effectively with racially and/or ethnically
diverse populations.
Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of students
with different ability statuses (e.g. physical and/or
learning).
An understanding of anti-racist and culturally-responsive
pedagogical practices which honor and respect what students bring
to the classroom and uses students' prior knowledge and/or lived
experiences to inform instruction.
Evidence of working effectively with post-traditional
students
Understanding equity as the recognition of historical and
systemic disparities in opportunity and outcomes and providing the
resources necessary to address those disparities.
Understanding universal design as a framework for achieving
equity, so students have options for how they learn, have
accessible materials and flexibility in how they demonstrate their
learning.
An equity-minded, culturally responsive counseling approach
focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space that supports
student engagement and success.
Working knowledge of Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation
Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other Federal and State
legislation affecting the provision of disability services in the
college setting.
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and
professionally with the campus community.
Completion of, or eligibility for, training in the current CCC
Chancellor's Office Learning Disabilities Eligibility &
Services Model.
Experience in administering learning disabilities assessments,
especially with the Woodcock Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery,
the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the Wide Range Achievement
Test, The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, and the
Nelson-Denny Reading Test.
Experience evaluating disability documentation and determining
reasonable accommodations based on functional
limitations.
Experience advising or counseling college students with a range
of disabilities in higher education.
Experience teaching college students with disabilities, and
supporting students with strategies in the areas of transfer level
math and English.
Experience working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic,
socioeconomic, academic and disability backgrounds including
intervention, retention and success strategies.
Experience giving presentations on disabilities and educational
equity to the public.
Familiar with the K-12 legal landscape as well as evaluating
IEPs and 504 Plans for the purpose of developing an appropriate
Academic Accommodation Plan for the college setting.
Knowledge of computer technology, assistive technology, and
online instruction along with access barriers for students with
disabilities.
Experience advising or instructing students with disabilities
taking classes online.
Experience in developing and assessing Student Learning
Outcomes and Services Area Outcomes.
Ability to communicate in American Sign Language
(ASL).
Ability to communicate in Spanish.
Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the
discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board
of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty
and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.
To be qualified for the Learning Disability
Specialist/Counselor position, applicants must meet the state
minimum qualifications required in the following disciplines:
Counselor of Students with Disabilities AND Learning Disabilities
Specialist as listed below.
Counselor of Student with
Disabilities:
Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling
OR
Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student
personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling,
social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or
marriage, family and child counseling OR a
Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage,
family and child counseling and possession of a license as a
Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); AND either
fifteen (15) or more semester units in upper division or
graduate-level coursework specifically related to people with
disabilities, OR
Completion of six (6) semester units, or the equivalent of
graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work
courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and
Services (DSPS) program or in a program dealing with people with
disabilities OR
Two (2) years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in
one or more of the following:
Counseling students with disabilities
OR
Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military
or private social welfare organizations in which the
responsibilities are for persons with disabilities
disabilities
A lifetime California Community College Disabled Students
Programs and Service (DSPS) Instructor Credential authorizing
service to teach courses in college for students with
disabilities.
Learning Disabilities Specialist:
Master's degree in learning disabilities, special education,
education, psychology, speech language pathology, communication
disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or
rehabilitation counseling AND fifteen (15)
semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area
learning disabilities to include, but not limited to adult
cognitive and achievement assessment OR
The Equivalent OR
A lifetime California Community College Disabled Students
Programs and Service(DSPS) Instructor Credential authorizing
service to teach courses in college for students with
disabilities
Possess a combination of education and experience that is at
least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an
application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application
for Equivalency in addition to all other required
material.
Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse
academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity,
sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college
students, faculty and staff.
If the title of your degree as stated on your transcripts
DOES NOT EXACTLY MATCH one of the degree titles
listed in the minimum qualifications listed above, you must request
an equivalency review and submit conclusive supporting documents at

Selection Procedure:
The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal
interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A
teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants.
After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee
will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President
for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be
presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and
authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in
remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be
conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols
as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
