The successful candidate must have the presence and academic
credibility to lead some of the most preeminent faculty in the

that is fundamental to the strategic priorities of the school and
university. Duke University was created in 1924 through an
indenture of trust by James Buchanan Duke and is regarded as one of
the world’s leading research universities. Located in Durham, North
Carolina, Duke is positioned in the heart of the Research Triangle,
which is ranked annually as one of the best places in the country
to live and work. Duke has more than 15,000 students who study and
conduct research in its 10 undergraduate, graduate and professional

private employer in North Carolina, with international programs in
more than 150 countries. Duke University’s Pratt School of
Engineering was founded in 1939. It is among the top 20 in research
productivity among U.S. engineering schools (Academic Analytics)
and ranks #12 among the top 25 overall U.S. engineering schools in
research expenditures per faculty member according to U.S. News
& World Report. It is home to more than 170 regular rank
faculty, approximately 1,300 undergraduates, and almost 1,700
graduate students. In the past decade external research funding has
nearly doubled, with new awards to Duke Engineering rising by 43
percent in the past five years. The Department of Biomedical
Engineering is perennially in the top five of U.S.News & World
Report rankings, with a current ranking of 3rd in the graduate
program and 4th in undergraduate program. It is known for strong
ties to Duke’s School of Medicine (ranked 3rd in the nation) and
academic medical center. Duke BME is home to 570 students across
all degree-granting programs (178 BS, 144 MS/MEng and 248 PhD), 51
primary faculty, 39 secondary faculty, and a team of approximately
150 technical and administrative staff members. The department is
world-renowned for achievements in research areas of the field,
including bioelectric engineering; biomaterials; biomechanics and
mechanobiology; biomedical and health data science; biomedical
imaging and biophotonics; biosensors and bioinstrumentation;
computational modeling of biological systems; drug and gene
delivery; immune engineering; neural engineering; synthetic and
systems biology; and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Applicants for the position must have a record of inspiring
leadership as well as a broad vision for the field of biomedical
engineering and its role in addressing the grand challenges of our
time. In addition to exceptional leadership experience, the
candidate must have established excellence in, and show exceptional
promise for, high-quality research, teaching, and professional
development. Duke encourages interdisciplinary collaboration as
well as entrepreneurial activities, which serve to broaden the
societal impact of our research and teaching. Diversity,
equity, and belonging are integral to our school and university
mission. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated
commitment to diversity and inclusivity in the biomedical
engineering field. We also strongly encourage candidates from
underrepresented groups to apply. The successful
candidate will be expected to leverage their leadership experience
to ensure that Duke BME remains at the forefront of both
groundbreaking research and educational pedagogy. In addition, the
