Position Summary:
The Interim Director directs student programming and coordinates operations in the Center for Writing and Learning. The Interim Director supports student academic achievement at the University of Puget Sound by directing the university's Writing Advisor and Subject Tutor programming, supervising CWL student and professional staff members, and coordinating the work of CWL faculty writing advisors; coordinates with the Faculty Development Center to offer faculty development support related to writing instruction; and works with other staff members in the CWL and campus partners to assess and further develop programming.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
-
Coordinate with CWL professional staff
and faculty advisors in providing leadership and support to the CWL
community of roughly 40 undergraduate peer tutors
Lead in the hiring, training, and mentoring
of Peer Writing Advisors, Subject Tutors, and Peer Academic
Consultants
Teach CWL 300 (Theory and Praxis of Peer
Learning), the course for new Subject Tutors and Writing
Advisors
Lead bimonthly student staff meetings and
other ongoing peer staff education
Coordinate with the Faculty Development
Center to offer periodic programming and consultation related to
writing pedagogy
Work with campus partners (e.g., faculty,
Academic Deans' Office, Institutional Research, Student
Accessibility and Accommodation, Fellowships) in supporting writing
assessment and developing programming to meeting evolving student
academic support needs
Coordinate one-to-one writing appointments
with students and alumni working on personal statements during the
summer and taking summer classes
Serve on university committees, as needed
(including Academic Leadership Team and “Wednesdays at 4” faculty
development series steering committee, and Student
Success/First-Year Experience committee)
Write CWL annual
report and annual diversity report
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise the CWL
Administrative Assistant and Peer Tutor Coordinator staff
positions.
Supervise CWL
Writing Advisors, Subject Tutors, and Peer Academic
Consultants.
Budget Responsibilities
- Manage the CWL operating budget.
Qualifications:
-
Ph.D. degree preferred (in Composition
and Rhetoric, Education, or a related field); Master's degree
acceptable
Professional engagement and experience with
writing center work and with teaching writing at the college
level
Excellent interpersonal and communication
skills
Ability to work with a diverse student
population including multilingual students and students with
disabilities
Experience teaching with educational
technology such as Canvas or other learning management system,
Google Workspace, and Zoom
Ability to set goals and work independently
while contributing to a collaborative, team-oriented
environment
Experience supervising a large team of
undergraduate student employees
Knowledge of assessment practices
preferred
Ability to
respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a
diverse campus community
Calendar: The position is a year-round position beginning July 1, 2022 but can begin sooner, if the successful candidate desires.
Compensation and Benefits: Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

About the Center for Writing and Learning: The CWL is a thriving center for peer learning that offers undergraduate peer tutoring in writing across the curriculum, as well as subject tutoring, academic consulting, and multilingual language partners. With support from faculty mentors, students from our center regularly present at the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing, which we hosted in 2016, and our students have presented at the European Writing Centers Association Conference and the European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing. Sound Writing is the award-winning, open-source writing handbook authored by students from our Center in collaboration with faculty mentors. The CWL was founded in 1984 and was featured in the landmark 1993 Writing Centers in Context.
