This is an hourly, full-time (40hrs/week), 12 months benefited position dependent upon continued grant funding. Funding expected to expire December 2022. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: TRIO Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded program designed to increase the college participation of low-income and potential first-generation college-bound students. TRiO UB is designed to encourage participants to complete high school and continue their education at the post-secondary level by offering academic support, informational workshops, guidance, motivation and advocacy to program participants, their parents and target schools. The program provides required and permissible services as expressed in federal legislation/regulations. CSUMB is proud to host two TRiO Upward Bound (UB) grants, supporting 4 high schools in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
The programs consist of an Associate Director, two Educational Advising Specialists, one Math and Science Advisor, an Administrative Assistant person, and a team of undergraduate student Educational Advising Assistants, Mentors, and Tutors. As part of the Pre-College Programs TRiO UB and other educational equity programs provide the campus and target schools with retention and support services for participants.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:The Math and Science Advisor, under the supervision of the Associate Director for UB, is responsible for representing CSUMB Upward Bound at assigned target schools via weekly school visits, community and college events and during scheduled program activities and services. The incumbent advises 9th-12th grade UB students & families regarding information, procedures, and academic requirements of specific STEM programs or STEM majors and assists students in exploring STEM careers, evaluating academic abilities, and setting goals and is expected to provide academic advising that facilitates student success, persistence and degree completion in a timely manner. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:1. Assist in the planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating project activities.2. Establish and maintain effective communication with all staff, students, parents, and partners.3. Develop and conduct individual and small group counseling services and academic, career, college and financial workshops for program participants and their families interested in STEM.4. Work closely with Associate Director to recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate UB tutors/mentors.5. Oversee and provide proper training to UB STEM tutors/mentors. 6. Conduct surveys and data on Math and Science programming outcomes of UB students. 7. Organize social, cultural, and recreational activities and field trips during the summer and academic year, including college visits & senior retreats related to math and science.8. Provide residential support during the six-week residential summer program.9. In conjunction with the Associate Director, Educational Advising Specialists and instructors, plan summer curriculum focusing on STEM components. 10. Consult with participants, high school teachers, and UB liaison to monitor participants' progress.11. Maintain appropriate records to ensure compliance with grant regulations and reporting requirements, and to facilitate program evaluation. 12. Contribute and assist with the preparation and submission of Annual Performance Reports to U.S. Department of Education and other reports required by the Corporation and/or CSUMB.13. Provide the Associate Director regular oral and written progress reports.14. Serve as liaison to the campus target schools, community agencies, and general public.15. Handle sensitive and/or confidential documents and information where judgement and discretion are essential.16. Responsible for inputting accurate student data in Lacai or other data systems.17. Ensure confidentiality of all program records and other sensitive information. Other Functions:1. Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the program and campus community.2. Attend workshops, conferences, and advisory meetings as needed.3. Perform other duties as assigned4. Support Upward Bound staff when needed.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments. Ability to prepare oral and written reports and comments that are clear, comprehensive, and concise Possess professional writing and public speaking abilities; computer experience; ability to manage multiple projects/tasks and adhere to deadlines. Must be highly motivated, flexible and have the ability to work in various educational settings.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, College Student Personnel or closely related field required. A background in Math/Science education is preferred. Experience working with low-income, first-generation college bound students; experience working with high school students from diverse backgrounds. Experience in providing workshops and educational activities in STEM to large and diverse groups.

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience working in educational programs for disadvantaged youth desired. Familiarity with local districts, target schools and community resources a plus. Bilingual English/Spanish desirable. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services.

Special Conditions of Employment:
Must be willing and able to work evenings and weekends and to travel in and out-of-state as deemed necessary to provide services to participants and attend professional development opportunities. Position will require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations such as Upward Bound target schools. Must have own transportation, valid driver’s license, and auto insurance. Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Compensation and Benefits:

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. The hourly rate for this position is $27.92. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
