The Associate Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is responsible for advancing the mission of Saint Joseph’s College by fostering a culture of equity and inclusive excellence that reflects the College’s Catholic identity, Mercy heritage, and Core Values. This person will be a visible presence on campus, actively engaging students, faculty, staff, alumni, board members, and community members to continuously strive for a more just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive community; and serving as a resource for the greater community. 

This person supports the College’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion by: promoting academic integration, supporting student development, promoting institutional resilience, promoting community resilience and serving as Special Assistant to the President to advance the College. 

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Sociology, or related field is required.
  • Demonstrated experience and success working with, and sensitivity to, individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds including race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual identity and expression and those students with English as a second language.
  • Experience in creating and implementing multicultural programs and workshops, assisting campus organizations in planning programs that address social issues within the College community, and developing activities that enhance all students’ knowledge of ethnic cultures and celebrations is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Experience in developing innovative approaches to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion practices that provide a welcoming experience for all - regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and/or sexuality.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, including writing, speaking and listening
  • The personal qualities of trustworthiness, openness, kindness, flexibility, and a sense of humor
  • Knowledge of and commitment to SJC Mission, Core Values and the Catholic, Mercy tradition. In particular, a familiarity with Catholic social teaching is helpful.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and coalition building skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff, students, administration and the community, including individuals of diverse backgrounds, life experiences and abilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Policy development, policy communication, policy training and policy administration skills
  • Effective presentation skills and speaking to large audiences
  • Skilled at planning, organizing, coordinating, executing, and evaluating office projects
  • Ability to relate to college-age students, non-traditional students (including online students), faculty, staff, and board members.
  • Ability to work as a member of a collaborative team
  • Ability to concentrate and follow through on all assignments to completion
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
  • Tolerates work related stress effectively and maintains self-control/professionalism.
