Job Summary:
Old Dominion University is seeking two candidates for the (full-time, 12 month) Transfer Academic Success Advisor. The Transfer Academic Success Advisors primary responsibility is to provide academic advising and support to newly admitted and prospective transfer students toward enrollment and completion as ODU students. This is accomplished by understanding students’ goals and interests, unofficially evaluating previously-completed credits against ODU’s program/major curriculums, and discussing options for transfer pathways, major exploration, degree works review, and registration assistance during Orientation and the semester. The advisor interprets academic requirements through regular and ongoing communications throughout the recruitment, admission, and first semester enrollment stages. Additionally, the advisor develops and offers strategic data-driven campaigns for transfer students that aid them in the transition from another school or industry to ODU to increase the admit-enroll, retention and graduation rates of transfer students. Further, this position collaborates with the Assistant Director for Transfer Initiatives and the STEM Completion Initiatives to develop transfer maps and transfer initiatives focused on directly supporting the university commitment to growing enrollments in transfer students through enhanced outreach and collaboration with the advising team in the College and Transfer Initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Counseling, Public Administration, Higher Education, or other related discipline. Prior working academic advising experience in a higher education setting with working knowledge of counseling/advising, policies, practices, and procedures in Higher Ed. Working knowledge of the effective use of online resources and computer technology in advising students. Working knowledge of transfer student populations, developmental academic advising, and retention management. Excellent interpersonal skills, including public speaking. Strong written communication skills and skills utilizing technology and assessment. Effective programming and presentation skills. Effective organizational skills; versatility and problem-solving skills are a must. Demonstrated ability to multitask and attend to details and complete job requirements in a dynamic work environment. Ability to work independently and cooperatively with faculty and other offices on campus; and to provide timely and accurate information. Demonstrated ability to interpret academic transcripts, curriculum maps and course equivalencies, relay that information effectively, listen attentively, and build rapport with students.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior working experience using Banner and Degree Works, or other technology supporting academic advising or recruitment. Prior working experience advising transfer students.
