The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is seeking applications for the position of Financial Specialist to support the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and the Electa Quinney Institute (EQI) in the Division of Academic Affairs.

The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion administers university programs and initiatives that directly relate to diversity, equity, and inclusion matters at UWM, as well as provide campus support infuse diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into university operations. The focus of the Electa Quinney Institute is to strengthen and celebrate American Indian education at the local, regional and national level with strong connections to indigenous teaching practices around the globe. Through a generous gift of the Indian Community School Inc., the Electa Quinney Institute has endowed professorships in the School of Education with a strategic plan and vision for connecting American Indian programs at UWM with the Milwaukee and Wisconsin community.

Job Summary
The Financial Specialist will support travel accounting, accounts payable, purchasing needs and other administrative duties in the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Electa Quinney Institute in the Division of Academic Affairs. This is a full-time position that is split between the two units.

The Financial Specialist Primarily reviews, approves, and advises on a variety of advanced financial transactions. May prepare some financial transactions and reconciles transactions. Recommends controls and process improvements, troubleshoots advanced financial errors. Maintains financial records, provides administrative processing support, and provides customer service for staff and customers in an assigned program area to support program financial management.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An associate degree in related field
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating, processing, and tracking financial transactions or similar records
  • Experience providing customer service in a client facing capacity


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field by date of hire
  • Demonstrated experience in financial auditing and/or analysis
  • Experience querying and compiling financial information from on-line or web-based financial management and accounting systems and databases
  • Evidence of knowledge of the laws and regulations governing travel administration or procurement
  • Experience performing fund accounting
  • Experience analyzing, interpreting and summarizing financial data
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience working with diverse populations
