Hiring Department Summary:
Gerontology as an academic course of study has existed at Sacramento State for 41 years. We currently have over 250 diverse student majors that we continue to provide with unique interdisciplinary perspectives of the process of aging. The Gerontology curriculum focuses on health, illness, social justice, and other holistic aspects of aging encountered along the life span emphasizing intergenerational active aging for all populations.

Essential Duties:
• Classroom and online instruction in general and specialty gerontology areas incorporating an emphasis on diverse aging populations.
• Supervision/coordination of students in Service Learning and community agency-based Practicum courses
• Team teaching, including organizational abilities required for leading lecture and practicum courses
• Participation in course and department assessment, revision, and development
• Use of effective interpersonal skills, including team contributions and clear oral and written communication skills, with diverse faculty, students, staff, community agency members and service recipients
• Participation in student advising within the major/minor
• Engagement in scholarly and creative activities
• Active participation on Department, College, and University committees
• Involvement in aging community services and the professional community at large

Appointment Specifics:


Required Qualifications:
• Earned doctorate from an accredited university in gerontology or closely related discipline (e.g. nursing, social work, family studies/human development, psychology, sociology, etc.). ABD candidate may be considered. ABD candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by July 2022.
• Research, practice and/or experience in multicultural aging and inclusive practices.
• Experience and ability to create and teach inclusive college/university-level courses using a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.
• Demonstrated ability/experience to effectively supervise students and their community projects in applied settings (e.g. service learning, practicum, fieldwork and/or internships or other adults in community-based organizations).
• Minimum of 2 years professional working experience with chronically ill and/or well elders and their families.
• Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to use effective interpersonal skills, including contributing to the team while communicating and working effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community,
• Demonstrated ability to create and promote inclusive classrooms. integrate diversity and difference in the curriculum.
• Potential or proven track-record as a researcher conducting scholarly and applied research related to gerontology including elder individual/family/community health and/or illness issues.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Greater than 1-year college/university teaching experience.
• Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works.
• Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities especially those representing a large, diverse student body (inclusive of sexual orientation, ethnic groups, gender identity, social class, and disability status).
• Preparation or coursework on inclusive curriculum development and instruction.
• Experience with e-learning technology (distance learning and online delivery platforms)
• Evidence of academic student mentoring and advising.
• Publications in gerontology related areas in recognized peer-reviewed journals.
• Active involvement in professional organizations.
• Experience in any of the following: illness care, older adults with disabilities, or death and dying, research or service provision with underserved populations and communities.
• Licensure or certifications pertaining and applicable to the discipline of gerontology.
