Position Summary:

The Meriam Library is seeking an Equity & Outreach Librarian to make a significant contribution to the library and to the teaching and learning environment at CSU, Chico. We are looking for an energetic, forward‐thinking colleague interested in developing and implementing programs and initiatives aimed to improve undergraduate student success at the university, with a particular focus on first- and second-year students. Strong interpersonal skills are essential; the successful candidate will be a strong advocate for historically underserved student populations.

Working independently and collaboratively with colleagues, the Equity & Outreach Librarian will work directly with student groups and will seek out, and build relationships, with student success programs across campus, especially those supporting traditionally underserved populations. These programs include, but are not limited to, the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center (CCLC), the Gender and Sexual Equity Center (GSEC), the Student Transition and Retention Center (STAR), the Adelante Program, and the Office of Tribal Relations. They will work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues in the Meriam Library to improve student engagement with library resources and programming.

This position will develop and coordinate library initiatives aimed at improving student academic success and will collaborate with other campus, academic and student services units. Additional areas of assignment will include reference service, collection development, and subject-area liaison duties.

Contributions in professional development, research, and university service are expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a terminal degree in Library/Information Science. Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met by time of hire.
  • ALA accredited graduate degree in Library/Information Science.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in conducting outreach and engagement efforts with students and campus partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice and interest in working with diverse student populations, including first generation, non-traditional, and historically underserved students.
  • Exceptional spoken, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and analytically and to work effectively in a collegial, collaborative, service-focused environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in an academic library or other educational setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with contemporary educational technologies.
  • Familiarity with applying learner-centered pedagogy in information literacy instruction.
  • Evidence of interest in, or contribution to, professional research activities.
  • Bilingual candidates will be given preference.
Responsibilities:
  • Pursues outreach efforts to engage the students and academic community.
  • Works with student success organizations and other campus units to align the library’s student outreach efforts with the Library and University Strategic Goals to support an inclusive, equitable, and a diverse campus learning environment.
  • Maintains an awareness of best practices in information literacy and library instruction.
  • Works with library administration to promote library resources and services to the University and community.
  • Works to meet faculty research and service requirements to attain tenure.
  • Participates in library governance and supports the strategic goals of the Library and the University.
The Department:

The Meriam Library supports a comprehensive university curriculum at the Master’s degree level and emphasizes active engagement and outreach with faculty and students. The Library is a unit of Academic Affairs. In accordance with the CSU salary schedule, the monthly salary for a 12-month Senior Assistant Librarian begins at $5,779.00; salary is flexible based on education and experience.
