Assistant Professor of Art (Tenure-Track)

Graphic Design

College of Arts and Sciences

Art and Art History

JOB SUMMARY:

The Department of Art and Art History at Adelphi University invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Art and Art History with a specialty in Graphic Design. This position requires an MFA or another terminal degree in a design related field and a minimum of three years of professional experience in graphic design. The candidate will also have at least two years of academic teaching experience and demonstrated success in working with diverse populations. We are most interested in candidates who can advance the institution's commitment toward a diverse and inclusive educational institution through their pedagogy, practice, and experience.

Adelphi University's concentration in graphic design is an immersive two-year degree program of upper-level undergraduate art majors who work on self-directed projects as well as “client” commissions from both within and outside the University. After an intensive two-year art foundation program, graphic design students learn to develop design strategies that they apply to real-world social, political, aesthetic, and system-based problems. The program engages students in the entire design process: from design conception to implementation of final design projects.

We seek a candidate who is interested to become an integral member of a teaching environment that includes studio art, graphic design, art education, and art history. This candidate will possess an active professional design practice and demonstrate strong potential for continued professional success. We are especially interested in a candidate who has a collaborative approach to art and design, be able to teach type and publication design, and demonstrates an interest or specialization in either UI/UX, motion graphics, environmental graphics, interactive / time-based media, or data visualization. This new appointee will be responsible for shaping the Department's approach to graphic design. He/She/They will oversee the graphic design program, including the studio, while teaching a suite of courses within it every semester.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Directing the Design Studio and overseeing the design programs, including the BFA in graphic design and the minor in graphic design.
  2. Teaching a regular course load of 18 credits per year to a combination of design majors and minors.
  3. Organizing and overseeing required internships for both Junior and Senior design students.
  4. Coordinating “client” commissions from the University's multiple units across campus as well as from outside institutions and nonprofits.
  5. Organizing invitations to professional designers to give feedback as guest critics to the students.
  6. Supervising and overseeing the senior capstone design projects as well as the senior graphic design exhibition.
  7. Participating in department-wide project review days.
  8. Collaborating with Art and Art History faculty on special projects and pitching new classes that appeal to a cross section of art and design students.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. MFA or terminal degree in Graphic Design or related design discipline.
  2. 2+ years of successful teaching experience.
  3. 3+ years of professional experience in graphic design.
  4. An active record of distinguished client projects, publications, and/or exhibitions and a strong potential for continued professional success.
  5. Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Knowledge of contemporary design theories and pedagogy with a demonstrated interest in either UI/UX, motion graphics, environmental graphics, interactive / time-based media, or data visualization.
