POSITION: CONTROLLER

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Senior Vice President, the Controller is responsible for overseeing business and finance operations, including general accounting, financial reporting, auditing, cash and investment management, auxiliary services, and other operations as may be assigned by the Senior Vice President. Directly supervises the operations and staff of the Business Office to include: General Accounting, Accounts Payables, Student Accounts, Budgeting, and the University Cashier and any other business units in conjunction with the Senior Vice President. This position prepares University financial reports including monthly financial updates, dashboard, and report variances; internal quarterly financial statements; annual external financial statements, and footnotes. Performs financial analysis, including budget to actual variance analysis and forecasting and analyzes/interprets data to make a recommendation on the appropriate action.

Provides leadership and overall direction to implement financial systems that are effective, efficient, and integrated to support the University’s financial function in the broadest sense including maintaining strong internal financial controls and managing the annual audits including financial audit, Single Audit, and NCAA audit requirement. Plans and recommend, and direct the formulation and implementation of budgetary procedures needed to protect the resources of the institution and to achieve maximum efficiency in operations; identify cost savings; prepare a budget for review by the Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration, and prepare both internal and external budget reports.

 

The Controller will also manage University cash flow; draw funds on grants monthly; ensures that grants are invoiced appropriately; monitors grant payments received and moves funds as necessary to maintain appropriate cash levels in restricted funds. Partners with the University’s Advancement team for recording and monitoring of gifts. Reviews personnel actions to ensure that spending is budgeted and appropriately coded. Oversees the general accounting function to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. Oversees the student accounts function to ensure accurate and timely posting of student tuition, fees, credits, and collection. Ensures the accuracy of the financial data entered into and extracted from the University’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) database.

Responsible for continually interfacing with other departments to improve the efficiency of financial processes and systems.

 

Assists the Senior Vice President, the Board of Trustees, and its committees in the

development of long-range financial and business plans for the University.

Chairs ad hoc and standing committees as appointed. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department heads and employees, subordinates, contractors, sales representatives, engineers, architects, staff, faculty, students, parents, and the general public.

 

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Management/Finance, or a related field, with at least six years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or finance, and an active CPA is required. A master’s degree in Accounting or MBA, previous experience in Higher Education or a non-profit environment is preferred. Experience with Jenzabar is a plus. Experience with academic financial management practices and NACUBO standards is advantageous. Other qualifications include expertise in financial, accounting and operations management as well as an understanding of information systems and current practices and trends in higher education. Requires demonstrated expertise in financial planning, budgeting, accounting, treasury functions, and information technology as well as an understanding of and commitment to the goals and values of an academic community. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, a professional customer service demeanor, and the ability to work with confidential information. Other attributes include good judgment and initiative, intuitive instincts, excellent interpersonal management skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and changing environment. The equivalent combination of education and related work experience may be considered.
