Assistant Professor Positions Writing Studies
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

The Department of Writing, Literature & Publishing at Emerson College invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Writing Studies. The appointment begins August 18, 2022. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to traditional research, teaching, and service.

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the college's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities.

The Department of Writing, Literature, and Publishing is a vibrant and engaged community of scholars, writers, publishers, and designers with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 550 undergraduate majors, and 250 graduate students in its two Creative Writing MFA programs and Publishing MA program.

Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Its main campus is located in the center of the dynamic multicultural city of Boston, in close proximity to major publishing houses, arts institutions, and research centers. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Emerson College enrolls over 5,100 graduate and undergraduate students from more than 58 countries and all 50 states.

Program Description:
Emerson's nationally recognized Writing Studies Program was awarded the CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence in 2013. The program provides a required two-course sequence of first-year writing classes designed to enable undergraduate students to write competently and effectively in a range of modes. WR101: Introduction to College Writing focuses on cultural analysis that appears in academic work and in the public intellectual sphere. WR121: Research Writing explores how rhetorical situations call on writers to do research and how writers draw on various types of writing to present the results of their research. Additional emphasis is placed on training and mentoring graduate student instructors, through the pedagogy seminar WR600: Teaching College Composition, a weekly practicum, and regular professional development workshops. The Writing Studies Program at Emerson is an intellectually lively and socially engaged environment with longstanding commitments to community writing and publishing projects, translingual writing and teaching, and connections between rhetoric and composition and creative writing and publishing.

Duties:
Duties for these positions include teaching first year writing courses for undergraduate students and a pedagogy seminar for graduate students, mentoring graduate student instructors (who are MFA students in creative writing and MA students in publishing), collaboratively developing curriculum, and participating in the collaborative leadership of the program. Other opportunities within the Writing Studies program and the department of Writing, Literature, and Publishing will reflect candidates' areas of interest and expertise as well as circumstantial curricular needs.

Qualifications:
A PhD in rhetoric and composition or in a related area with significant experience in rhetoric and composition is required. The successful candidates will demonstrate their ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should have a record of successful college-level teaching and of ongoing scholarship, publication, and/or practice. Expertise in translingualism with a readiness to teach international student-focused course sections as well as mentor other instructors of those sections, and in Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing in the Disciplines, will be of particular interest. Strengths in comparative and inclusive rhetorics, anti-racist pedagogy, multimodality and digital literacy, community writing and publishing, and intersections with creative writing or literary study are also especially suited to the intellectual/curricular work of the program.

To Apply:

Please submit a letter of application, current curriculum vita, and the names and contact information for three references (not to be contacted without applicant's written approval).

Please note, in the job application where there is the "CV/Cover Letter/ Additional Documents" drop box, you must include all of the required materials listed above. You can upload each document separate or as a combined PDF. Your application will not be complete without these documents.

If you are having issues uploading, please email facultycareers@emerson.edu.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2021 but the position remains open until filled.
