University of Idaho

Regular Faculty

Location: Moscow

Division/College: College of Science

Employee Category: Faculty

Pay Range:

Full/Part Time: Full Time

Position Summary:
As part of the University of Idaho’s focus on sustainability, the College of Science announces a cluster hire focused on the response of biological communities to global change. By hiring a cluster of collaborative faculty, we seek to aim our research infrastructure at the most pressing problems facing humanity over the next decades.

Hires will be at the tenure track assistant professor level, and research pairs or teams are encouraged to apply. We seek highly collaborative and interdisciplinary scientists to establish strong extramurally funded research programs that build on existing strengths and collaborations within the college and university. We welcome applications from scientists with research programs that fit under the broad umbrella of this cluster and anticipate a hire within each of four departments within the college—Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geography and Geological Sciences, and Mathematics and Statistical Science. The College of Science places a high priority on increasing the diversity of faculty, and we are committed to hiring, supporting, and retaining a diverse team of researchers for this cluster hire.

We seek a colleague who applies geographic information, analysis or modeling to research global change and the interactions with natural or managed biological systems at any scale. Example research programs include but are not limited to: responses of species or communities; impacts on processes such as fluxes of energy, water, carbon, and nutrients on ecosystem services (e.g., food, recreation); or development or assessment of human actions to reduce the impacts of global change on biological systems (such as using forests to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations). This scholar will build upon the department’s existing strengths in climate and other natural hazards, water, and geospatial analysis and modeling.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a vigorous, collaborative externally funded research program that expands the scope of departmental capability while building upon and integrating with existing and emerging strengths of the department and college. They will advise students at undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. levels. Teaching expectations include an average of three classes per academic year, including an undergraduate geographic information systems class as well as other introductory and upper-division courses. Service to the department, university, and community is also expected.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate degree in geography, geosciences, or other related field
- Potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching
- Potential to develop a student-focused extramurally funded research program
- Evidence of an active research program
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
- College teaching experience
- Experience in a highly interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment
- Research focus applying geographic information, analysis, or modeling to research global change and the interactions with natural or managed biological systems at any scale
- Success obtaining and managing extramural funding related to research focus
- Experience teaching geographic information systems to undergraduate or graduate students
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
