THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Modern Languages and Literature has five full-time faculty members (2 men / 3 women). We currently have 37 students majoring in the Spanish / French programs and a total of 95 students minoring across the five language programs: American Sign Language, Chinese Language and Culture, French, Japanese Language and Culture, and Spanish.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department of Modern Languages and Literature at California State University, East Bay seeks an Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) in Spanish Sociolinguistics. We seek a teacher-scholar with a record of engagement in the study of the relationship between ethnicity/race and language. Our Spanish language majors prepare students with Spanish bilingual competency and our goal is to support and enhance majors across departments throughout the University. The candidate will be expected to teach courses in the area of Spanish Sociolinguistics, Spanish language acquisition, and Spanish cultures at the undergraduate levels. In particular, we seek a candidate with experience in curriculum development in developing the Spanish language California Single Subject Waiver for K-12 teachers. Other areas of expertise might include Latinx in the US, Spanish in the US, Afro-Latinx, multilingual Asians in Latin America and the US, Haitian/Latinx interactions, Central American/Mexican Spanish-indigenous bi/multilingualism, comparative cultural studies of the Spanish peninsula and Latin America, Spanish-English translation and interpretation, and/or Spanish in contact with other languages, and language policy. The department currently has five full-time tenured faculty teaching in the areas of Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, and American Sign Language. In addition to teaching and research, all faculty are expected to provide student advising, department and university governance work, and in community-wide engagement in their area of expertise.

Bilingual Linguistics is a comparative study of languages—its sounds (phonetics and phonology), structure (morphology and syntax), words (lexicon) and their meaning (semantics and pragmatics), etc. and moreover, Sociolinguistics analyzes the relationship between Spanish speaking societies, language uses and local linguistic structures.

Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that tenure-track faculty members will perform their duties within the state of California. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall 2022 Semester (August 17, 2022)

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT: PhD in hand in Spanish Linguistics, Spanish cultural-linguist studies, or related field no later than the effective date August 1, 2022, and advanced-high proficiency in Spanish.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates with successful teaching experience at the university level are preferred.
