Job Summary

The Center for Student involvement welcomes applications for an Assistant Director! The Assistant Director is an exempt professional position and serves as one of three assistant directors in the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) and reports to the Director. This position is a member of the CSI leadership team and works with the Director to provide leadership and strategic direction for the department. Assistant Directors in CSI have high levels of responsibility and authority over staff members, budget, and significant programs within the department. Assistant Directors have autonomy over decision-making related to the programs and services related to their area in collaboration with the Director and in alignment with the department’s mission and goals. Assistant Directors work with supervisees to set outcome goals and program direction for their respective areas. Additionally, they make staffing decisions for their areas in consultation with the Director.
The position specifically oversees the management of student organizations on the CU Boulder campus, including but not limited to the annual recognition process, liaison support model, advising resources, oversight of the student organization management platform, and training programs and events. This position will also be responsible for the leadership and skill building programs within CSI. Additional items that are included within this position’s portfolio include, but are not limited to: Student Organization Allocation Committee, the CU GOLD Leadership Program, departmental student employment, and general programming and events that support student organizations and student leadership.

Who We Are

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is a service department of the University of Colorado Boulder Student Government (CUSG) within the Division of Student Affairs. We cultivate an environment for building vibrant, engaging and safe communities through programming, leadership development, cultural awareness and learning opportunities.
We also serve as banker, bookkeeper, travel agent, purchasing department and event manager for student organizations. Student organizations using university facilities must maintain an account and conduct their business through our office. Funding for student organizations granted from university sources is also placed in appropriate accounts through us.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Human Resource Management:
  • Manage the student organization and leadership area of CSI. Being responsible for supervision of 3 FTE’s, 15-25 student employees, and a number of student board volunteers.
  • Assist or lead the processes to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff within the student engagement portfolio.
  • Supervise professional staff and in consultation with employees, set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that contribute to the department’s goals and vision.
  • Oversight of departmental student employee processes and procedures.
  • Ensure that all federal, state, university, and departmental hiring procedures are followed.

Student Organization Management:
  • Supervise and manage Student Organization functions for over 500 student organizations including the CSI staff liaison experience, registration process, online organization management system, trainings (including trainings around fiscal management to team building to student development), and advisor support.
  • Serve as the campus lead administrator for the student organization management platform.
  • Serve as a staff liaison to an assigned case load of student organizations.

Leadership Programming:
  • Oversee, manage, and develop student leadership programming and events, including cocurricular leadership training programs, skill development opportunities, and CU GOLD.

Strategic Planning, Leadership, and Assessment:
  • As a member of the CSI Leadership Team, support and provide vision and strategic direction for the department.
  • Provide vision and strategic direction for student organizations and leadership for CSI.
  • Provide leadership for CSI’s professional and student staff development, planning and implementation, assessment, all assigned initiatives, and oversight for student employment.
  • Serve on committees at University and National level, when appropriate.

Divisional and External Responsibilities:
  • Represent the Center for Student Involvement on various Division of Student Affairs and campus committees and working groups as assigned.

Financial Oversight:
  • Assist in the annual budget process as a staff member within a cost center of CU Student Government.
  • Maintain accurate budget expenditure records and plans for future contingency funds.
  • Coordinate all fiscal processes with maximum integrity and timeliness.
  • Follow all federal, state, university, and departmental budget procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Some evenings and weekends are required.
  • Provide secondary support and related duties as assigned which could include staffing additional events, committee appointments, assisting CSI in planning informational programming, events, and presentations, etc.

What We Can Offer
  • Salary range is $60,000 - $65,000. Onboarding assistance is available within Student Affairs guidelines.

What We Require
  • Master’s Degree in social sciences or related field from an accredited college or university and at least one year of professional, job related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Demonstrated experience with student organizations and leadership programming.
What You Will Need
  • Student Learning and Development- addresses the concepts and principles of student development and learning theory. This includes the ability to apply theory to improve and inform student affairs and teaching practice.
  • Organizational and Human Resources- includes knowledge, skills, and dispositions used in the management of institutional human capital, financial, and physical resources.
  • Assessment, Evaluation and Research (AER)- focuses on the ability to design, conduct, critique, and use various AER methodologies and the results obtained from them, to apply AER processes and their results to inform practice, and to shape the political and ethical climate surrounding AER processes and uses in higher education.
  • Advising and Supporting-addresses the knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to providing advising and support to individuals and groups through direction, feedback, critique, referral, and guidance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative supervisory and collegial working relationships.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Excellent organizational skills as demonstrated by the ability to balance numerous demands, evaluate competing priorities, and adjust planning, as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, demonstrated by the ability to interact comfortably with a wide range of a diverse group of people, including professional staff, students, faculty, parents, community partners, and media.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Three years of experience in providing administrative and managerial oversight for student organizations, leadership programs, student activities, or equivalent operations.
  • Three years of experience facilitating trainings for students and student leaders surrounding topics such as leadership development, group dynamics, or learning styles.
  • Three years of experience advising or working directly with student organizations or boards.
  • Experience managing a student organization management system, such as Presence, Engage, OrgSync, or a similar program.
  • Knowledge of student development theories, and a strong commitment to diversity and community building.
  • Solid understanding of program assessment and developing learning outcomes.
  • Event planning experience in a higher education setting.
  • Supervisory experience.
