Job Summary

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a postdoctoral position assessing the development of an innovative field-based graduate training program: FIRED Up or Field-Intensive Research Emphasizing Diversity UP in the alpine (read more at https://www.ebiofiredup.com/ ). This position will contribute to the design and assessment of FIRED Up. This will include informing iterative improvements to the design of the program and its long-term sustainability and integration into the department. The initial appointment will be for one year with an opportunity for renewal for a second year pending satisfactory performance. Opportunities to teach within the EBIO department will be provided as part of the position.

Who We Are

The FIRED Up Team is an interdisciplinary group of dedicated researchers and educators who prioritize creating graduate experiences that can build community, self-efficacy, and science identity ( https://www.ebiofiredup.com/our-team ). The team is composed of administrators, ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and discipline-based education researchers and draws on the experience of all team members to create graduate programs that emphasize skill building in a supportive and collaborative environment designed to encourage students to form lasting relationships and develop their own unique identities within science.

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EBIO) at the University of Colorado houses an innovative group of researchers and educators who are committed to improving graduate and undergraduate ecology and evolutionary biology education, enhancing inclusivity and enacting cultural change in support of minoritized groups, and investigating a diverse array of cutting-edge questions that address grand challenges within ecology and evolutionary biology. EBIO is broadly recognized across the CU Boulder campus for its innovations and efforts to support diversity and equity and to enact standard methodologies in education.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • The Postdoctoral Researcher associated with this project will assist with program administration and will lead efforts to design and implement education research testing the efficacy of the program. More specifically, this role will work closely with the team to coordinate parts of the project that assist the team in recruiting graduate students, organizing the logistics of program implementation, and archiving data on participant numbers, products, and outcomes. The postdoctoral associate will collaborate with Dr. Lisa Corwin to design and implement education research that will investigate program efficacy, including what components of the program support students’ motivation by providing students with experiences supporting their autonomy, competence, and community development.
  • Design, implement, assess, and provide feedback on FIRED UP.
  • Frequently communicate with and organize both the collaborative team and experiences for students in the program.
What You Should Know
  • Data collection and observations will take place at the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station, which is located at 9,000 ft above sea level in the mountains of Colorado. The successful candidate will be expected to live and work for short periods of time (i.e., several days at a time) at the Mountain Research Station.
What We Can Offer

The starting salary for this position is $55,000 per year. Relocation assistance of up to $1,000 is also available.

What We Require
  • Candidates for this position should have a Ph.D. in Biology, Education, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Candidates who have engaged in field-based research as part of their undergraduate or graduate career are strongly preferred.
  • Experience in qualitative research methodologies with experience conducting phenomenological and/or case studies.
  • Demonstrated interest and capability in teaching is required.
  • Candidates must also have a proven interest or experience in learning and mentoring strategies that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • A high level of organizational skills and excellent communication skills.
  • Serve as an excellent collaborator with the capability to engage in extended periods of qualitative data collection in which lots of data will be collected over short periods of time.
