Job Description Summary:

Under the direction of the Upward Bound Director, the Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of care and support for Upward Bound participants in partnership with Austin Independent School District (AISD) Northeast and Travis Early College High Schools. Administration of attention to significant mental health challenges to enhance the conditions and likelihood of student’s personal and academic success.

Job Description:

Description of Duties and Tasks
  • Plans and coordinates all education program activities, including scheduling and teaching classes; scheduling volunteers and outside agencies to facilitate classes, organizing attendance at other educational fairs and events; developing and updating lesson plans, conduct financial education or other seminars; builds relationships with local college career placement teams and local vocational school programs.
  • Recruits, identifies, delivers and documents services and activities to meet the needs of all assigned program participants by conducting college/career workshops for students and parents.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with parents, schools, and other service providers.
  • Tracks assigned participants from program entry through high school graduation to ensure postsecondary enrollment with one-on-one assistance to students concerning college admissions processes, financial aid, career and academic issues.
  • Records and enters student demographic and contact information in the program database (Blumen) for monthly submittal of statistical reports and student tracking for dissemination to college, high schools, parents, and community partners and Annual Performance Report (APR).
  • Gathers and distributes scholarship opportunities and maintenance of grade level scholarships for individual participant goals.
  • Monitors and acts as a liaison for the UB Ambassador program.
  • Recruits and engages males (male leadership) and females (female leadership) participants to increase secondary participation to retain and persist towards a post-secondary education. Male Leadership/Female Leadership creating monthly workshops to increase participation in the program focused on gender centered issues.
  • Oversees the dual enrollment and AP course load of participants to track high school completion of an Associate degree.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for target high school key personnel.
  • Researches data trends to aid in enhancing academic services and performance of participants.
  • Tracks and engages UB Alumni of post-secondary progress of all graduated participants while providing support to assist in the yearly matriculation until receiving a certificate of completion or degree within six years of high school graduation.
  • Uses information from the Academic Success Coach to discuss detailed academic coaching instructions and action item plan to parents whose students have fallen below 85 every six-weeks.
  • Provides one-on-one assistance to students concerning college admissions processes, financial aid, career, and academic issues to include: Junior/Senior Retreat, Financial Literacy, College Admissions, Freshman Housing, Freshman Orientation, Student Shot Records (Meningitis), Preparation of TSI/PSAT/SAT/PACT/ACT, College entrance exams.
  • Serves on high school, college, and community wide committees as assigned.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience in the college and financial aid application process.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and applications.
  • Knowledge and ability to exercise strong planning and organizational abilities, excellent documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of student and work-related information and materials such as Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), confidential electronic records, and legislative guidelines related to these records.
  • Knowledge of Department of Education (DOE) TRIO Regulation & Legislation
  • Knowledge of principles and methods in budget preparation, bid and purchasing procedures and expense control.
  • Knowledge of the complexities faced by low-income, first generation, and disables students and adults.
  • Knowledge of financial aid terminology; Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) filing requirements; types of federal student loans, and loan rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of college access and educational advising issues for underrepresented populations in higher education (i.e. admissions, securing scholarships, major and course selection, and experience working with individuals to promote financial and economic literacy).
  • Knowledge of and ability to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEP), evaluate transcripts, and interpret exam scores.
  • Knowledge of and ability to advise high school and college coursework.

Preferred Work Experience
  • Ability to gather, track, compile and analyze data to produce specialized reports to determine student needs for services.
  • Coordination of direct counseling services.
  • Linkage with community based partnerships and providers for student referrals.
  • Promotion of counseling services to student groups, faculty, and staff by assisting with outreach, training, and educational workshops to all campus constituency groups regarding policies, procedures, ethics and best practices in service and support.
  • Coordination of mental health resources to address mental health inquiries, and maintains a database of referral resources and community services.
  • Life experience with barriers similar to those from TRIO target populations, including but not limited to, being a member of an underrepresented group in higher education, being a first generation student, being from a low income family, or having a disability.
  • Experience providing individualized counseling to high school or college students, including assisting students with course selection, financial aid, and college enrollment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the academic needs of students facing barriers to educational success through academic coaching/advising, counseling, instruction, and/or education.
  • Experience in an educational setting teaching, advising, and/or tutoring low income, first generation college students.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones and students walking in the office.
  • Ability to display sensitivity to the educational and psychological issues affecting low-income, potential first-generation college-bound youth and indicate either professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population.
Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Education
  • Master's degree or higher in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Special Requirements
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation for local area travel.
  • Ability to conduct face-to- face sessions and workshops.
  • Ability to work face to face for six weeks during the summer programming (June-July) with no vacation until end of program.
  • Ability to take overnight field trips (Academic Program: Weekend (3 days) and Summer Program: Extended Week (up to 10 days).
Physical Requirements
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is performed in a variety of settings including in-studio, on-location, and standard office environment.

Full-time faculty and staffing table employees who work in full-time and/or part-time positions at the college are eligible for ACC medical benefits effective the first of the month after their first 60 days of employment. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, retirement plans and AD&D.

ACC does not participate in Social Security. ACC participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP-Faculty and Administrators Only). Part-time and Hourly employees participate in the ACC Money Purchase Plan (ACCMPP) as a retirement program required by federal law.
