Position Summary:

The Lead Server at Terrace Dining Hall p rovides outstanding customer service to maintain satisfaction among Dining Services guests. Lead Server is responsible for c ompleting various tasks related to preparing, presenting, and serving a range of hot and cold food items for various meal periods while s upporting and guiding student and staff to maintain optimal performance.

This is a full-time, 42-week opportunity during the academic year with 10 weeks off in early summer.

Supervision:

This position reports to the supervisor or manager on duty and reports to the Unit Manager for all administrative business operations.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide outstanding customer service to students, staff, faculty, and guests.
  2. Greet guests with a warm, friendly demeanor.
  3. Model accurate, safe, efficient, and pleasant performance expectations for student and temporary staff.
  4. Learn and adhere to all food preparation guidelines established by the culinary leadership team for Ithaca College Dining Services.
  5. Maintain knowledge of all food items on service lines, including ingredients, preparations, and allergens.
  6. Maintain knowledge of unit offerings and operating procedures to aid guests in inquiries, seeking supervisory aid if necessary.
  7. Comply with HACCP regulations and procedures.
  8. Prepare service lines by cleaning and sanitizing, turning on hot and cold wells, and ensuring the proper display of menus.
  9. Set up serving stations with all required menu items, service utensils, food containers, utensils, condiments, and items for cleaning and sanitizing.
  10. Maintain a clean and sanitized workstation, cleaning as necessary and when required by standard operating procedures.
  11. Take and record food temperatures at required intervals.
  12. Replenish items on service lines from coolers, ovens, and hot boxes as necessary or required.
  13. Break down service lines after each meal service and properly dispose of or store food.
  14. Clean and sanitize service lines, workstations, counters, steam tables, wells, cooler and warmer doors, and door handles; empty garbage cans and sweep around stations after each service.
  15. Assist with preparing the dining room before and after each meal service.
  16. Assist at other service stations as requested.
  17. Assist guests with special requests.
  18. Communicate often, clearly, and professionally with co-works and management.
  19. Assist with the inventory, stocking, and requisitions as needed.
  20. Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and cultivate an inclusive, diverse, and respectful Ithaca College community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students, and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative, and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
  21. Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and six months previous experience working in a food service operation or other relevant setting.
  • Excellent customer service aptitude.
  • Basic food handling knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to provide excellent customer service while working effectively and respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, overtime, and some holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional education and experience preferred including food service or production kitchen experience.
  • ServeSafe Certification.
  • Working knowledge of food preparation procedures and equipment, proper sanitation, and HACCP procedures.
Work Environment:

The Lead Server completes work within an accessible, safe, indoor, and occasional outdoor environment. Long periods of walking, standing, bending, and carrying moderately heavy items (up to 50 pounds) may be necessary. Employees will be issued and/or required to wear slip-resistant shoes, cut gloves, and operate kitchen equipment.
