The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s largest higher education institutions, and we are renowned globally for the quality of our teaching and research. We encourage enquiry, discovery, and achievement by bringing together academic excellence and an inspirational learning environment. Our ambitions are underpinned by an outstanding community of staff and students, a world-class campus and a strong financial position. The University also plays a key role at the heart of one of the UK’s most economically vibrant and compassionate cities, and takes its economic, social, environmental and cultural responsibilities very seriously.

Under the leadership of our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simone Buitendijk, we have launched our University Strategy 2020-2030: Universal Values, Global Change. A blueprint for a values-driven university, we will harness our expertise in research and education to help shape a better future for humanity, working through collaboration to tackle inequalities, achieve societal impact and drive change in genuinely distinctive and transformational ways. To help realise this exciting ambition we are now seeking to appoint a new Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor, the new COO is primarily responsible for University-wide operations and the direct service delivery of key corporate functions, including human resources, information services, marketing, student education services, research and innovation services, alumni & development, campus innovation & development, and transformational programmes. For the academic facing services, relevant Deputy Vice-Chancellors will also provide input to ensure consistency with academic strategies. Through the strategic alignment of these key areas, and the forging of highly constructive and resilient relationships across the University, the COO will ensure that our professional services drive organisational progress; effectively and efficiently supporting and enhancing our academic ambitions.

The successful candidate will have the vision and courage to challenge embedded practices, supporting more than 9,000 members of staff and over 38,000 students. We are seeking a strategic thinker, who has the proven ability to translate bold and innovative visions into reality and who can engender outstanding customer service and a high-performance management culture. Critically, they will have excellent communication skills and stakeholder management experience, a proven ability to manage complex change, and a genuine commitment to the transformative vision and mission of the University.
