The Position: Visiting Assistant Professor in Science Education

Position Starts: August 2022 – this is a full-time, one year appointment.

College: Natural Sciences

Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in physics, with an emphasis in physics education OR science education doctoral degree with a masters or master's equivalent course work in physics.

Preferred Qualifications:

K-12 teaching experience. Bilingual candidates will be given preference.

Responsibilities:

This position carries responsibilities in the area of teaching to include SCED 141: Concepts in Physical Science. This course is designed for future middle science teachers, and elementary school teachers. Basic concepts of motion, force, energy, chemical change, and their interactions.

This position also carries responsibilities for teaching SCED 321W: Scientific Inquiry. This course engages students in inquiry into topics that span the scientific disciplines. Skills addressed include experimental design, modeling, representation, dissemination of results, and critique of peers' work. Content topics include light, color, and sound, from biological, chemical and physics perspectives. This is a full-time, one year appointment.

The Department:

The Department of Science Education at California State University, Chico is a small, vibrant, multidisciplinary science education department in the College of Natural Sciences, offering a BS in Natural Sciences with the option of Science Education. Our program offers small enrollment courses. We are committed to maintaining a classroom culture that respects and fully values the strengths and differences of all our students; where all can share points of view, offer ideas, and be recognized for their contributions.

The primary role of the department is to provide science content courses for undergraduates interested in pursuing careers in formal and informal education. Faculty in the department have been awarded over $4 million in grant funding; redesigned the course sequence for future elementary teachers; developed a BS in Natural Sciences program; cultivated a cross-disciplinary community of researchers engaged in discipline based education research; developed strong partnerships with the Gateway Science Museum, Center for Math and Science Education, and the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve; diversified our teacher professional development efforts; and expanded our early practicum experiences for future teachers.
