The Health Center Administration invites applications for a Counseling Director to join their team. The Counseling Director is responsible for managing the mental and behavioral healthcare services provided by Counseling Services, networking with local and State stakeholders, and providing direct clinical care for UM students, which includes some after-hours response during campus tragedies. It has considerable autonomy and reports to the Executive Director of Curry Health Center (CHC).

The primary responsibility of managing Counseling Services is a leadership position with considerable complexity, including all aspects of personnel management, budget preparation, long range planning, delivery of mental/behavioral health services, identification and trouble-shooting of legal components and complaints, participation on campus/local/State committees, direction and involvement in campus outreach programs, staff development and training and quality improvement efforts. It assures compliance with the standards set forth by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).

The Counseling Director serves on the CHC management team and participates in the leadership of the health center with the expectation of collaborating with other CHC departments in clinical care and prevention. This position also represents Curry Health Center and/or the University of Montana in campus/community activities and taskforces. It requires a considerable degree of initiative and vision. The Director regularly interfaces with key campus departments, including leadership in Student Affairs, Community Standards, faculty, athletics, administration, and the University Police Department. It has frequent contact with University legal counsel, parents, loved ones and concerned others. The Director provides consultative services to the broader campus community related to suicide prevention and dealing with disruptive students. As such, the Director is a member of the University’s Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and the Admissions Review committee.

The individual in this position works closely with the UM Housing to train their staff. The position also works with the Associate Director of UM Housing in charge of conduct, the Associate Director of Community Standards and the Associate Vice Provost of Student Success regarding issues related to the student code of conduct.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program
  • Salary for this position is $89,440 per year commensurate with qualifications
Required Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree or higher in a mental health field (psychology, social work, counseling, etc.)
  • Licensed to provide mental health care in the State of Montana, i.e. Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Clinical Psychologist
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Successful supervisory skills
  • Budgeting skills including a working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets
  • General computer skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to strategically plan to establish department priorities
  • Must have the ability to represent CHC in a positive manner
  • Understanding of HIPAA and FERPA rules
  • Working knowledge of brief counseling model
  • Curry Health Center (CHC) strongly encourages all employees to be current with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations on immunizations for Health Care Worker (HCW). This will ensure a safe work environment for our employees as well as our patients. The employees who have not been vaccinated will not be able to work if an outbreak occurs
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in a mental health field (psychology, social work, counseling, etc.)
  • 3 years of demonstrated managerial experience
  • At least 1 year of experience in a college health setting
